Rolling Advice/question

so ds can roll from both belly to back and back to belly, but he only wants to do it if I nudge him or move his arms and legs into position (best way I can describe it) first. He refuses to do it on his own and if on his tummy will lay there superman style crying until I help a little. Or if on his back will just lay on his side arching his back.
any tips or advice for trying to help him get to do it without my interference..or should I just give him more time

Re: Rolling Advice/question

  • Just give him time. DS could roll belly to back at 3 months and back to belly at 4.5, but about 5.5 he started to really roll on his own a lot.

  • DD cannot roll either way.  It is perfectly normal not to be rolling back to belly at this age, but rolling belly to back is usually done by 5 months. We actually just met with early intervention today to start the process.  They said it was ok if she was not rolling yet so long as she is not delayed in any other areas (we are doing the full evaluation next week).  They suggested more tummy time even if she is crying.

  • You're probably already doing this, but you can also take a toy, bottle or something else he enjoys and move it after he sees it.  Sometimes they just need a bit of motivation to get moving.  I also always lay down next to Bridget when she's on her tummy and talk to her which seems to help.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • Give it time.  I know it hurts to hear your LO cry but it's okay to let then be frustrated for a minute or 2 while they struggle with something.

Addy did belly to back fast, at 13 weeks.  She did it a bunch at first, then stopped for awhile.  It worried me at first bc we were too busy for much tummy time, I was afraid she forgot how.  Then one day a few weeks ago I put her down on her activity mat and she rolled, rolled, rolled, back to belly to back again!  Something must've just cicked.  Now she does it all the time like it's NBD, to get from toy to toy.
  • Anna is like this. I'm not concerned yet , but she has been to the pedi to discuss her lack of using her hands . Apparently she's just a diva and doesn't feel like playing

I would give it time and maybe go for a few days without helping him. My son can roll both ways, and goes from back to belly often and easily, but then does the superman/swimming motion and gets frustrated because he can't crawl I think. One day I decided to let him whine in that position for a while and he actually picked his little knees up and got into the crawling position and started sort of scooting forward. I wouldn't call it crawling, but its the beginning. So, depending on his mood, I'll let him whinge a bit when he's on his stomach so that he get motivated to use different muscles and move. Once he starts deteriorating to real crying, I pick him up though. Funnily, he tries harder to move and won't cry if he thinks I am not in the room, once he knows I'm there he fusses
