LO decided she no longer would accept purées from a spoon from me and we also had to start supplementing with formula because she's not getting enough milk from me. It's created this perfect storm of horrendous constipation - awful. Any tips or tricks?? I do not want to have to resort to milk of magnesia every day to help with her constipation. Things I've tried:
(1) small amount of diluted apple juice in water (she isn't wild about drinking it or even water for that matter all of a sudden - wtf!!!?)
(2) probiotics
(3) giving her prune and pear purée via a syringe (oddly she will take that a little but refuses a spoon)
(4) momma bliss Constipation Ease - just tried it for the first time this morning
(5) the ol qtip trick to help the poop out - not very successful
(6) small amount of water added to BM or formula bottles
bicycling her legs, warm baths, etc - nothing seems to help.
Will things start to get better as time goes on, like does she just need to adjust to having this new formula added to her diet? Or will she always probably have constipation issues from formula, is that just part of the deal with that?
Re: The Perfect Storm
So he told me add water to all their purees. He told me to give 100% prune juice, 100% apple juice or 100% pear juice without watering it down every time they had solids. After a week(i started doing this last monday) their poops started getting softer & easier for them to poop.
Good luck.
Anyway, here's what helped for me! I've given my son anise tea since I stopped nursing (6 weeks pp) I mix his formula with it instead of water. Just his night bottle. My mom swore by it to help with upset stomach, constipation, gas and even helping him sleep (which ironically enough he's been a great sleeper since day 1, even through his growth spurts). Anyway about 2.5 weeks ago he had the stomach bug and had horrific diarrhea for over a week so I stopped the anise because I knew it would make it worse. I just got in the habit of not making it so he hasn't had it in a while. Last night I made him a bottle and this morning I did and he finally pooped! I really think it's the anise because I tried everything like you did. Pears, prunes, Vaseline in the butthole, nothing worked. I don't know which is worse- mega diarrhea where I had to change his clothes everytime he pooped, or changing his clean dry diaper 20x a day because of poop pebbles!
I get get it from Arabic stores here but I do know health stores sell it too. They sell it by the ounce and you don't need much. I use a tablespoon in a kettle full of water. Boil and steep for 10mins and strain. I store it in a glass jar in the fridge and use what I need. I warm it up for my son. It tastes like black licorice.
