The Perfect Storm

LO decided she no longer would accept purées from a spoon from me and we also had to start supplementing with formula because she's not getting enough milk from me. It's created this perfect storm of horrendous constipation - awful. Any tips or tricks?? I do not want to have to resort to milk of magnesia every day to help with her constipation. Things I've tried:

(1) small amount of diluted apple juice in water (she isn't wild about drinking it or even water for that matter all of a sudden - wtf!!!?)

(2) probiotics

(3) giving her prune and pear purée via a syringe (oddly she will take that a little but refuses a spoon)

(4) momma bliss Constipation Ease - just tried it for the first time this morning

(5) the ol qtip trick to help the poop out - not very successful

(6) small amount of water added to BM or formula bottles

bicycling her legs, warm baths, etc - nothing seems to help.

Will things start to get better as time goes on, like does she just need to adjust to having this new formula added to her diet? Or will she always probably have constipation issues from formula, is that just part of the deal with that?

Re: The Perfect Storm

  • This problem started for me with the boys 3 weeks ago. The doc said they weren't getting enough water. @ this age they should be getting 6-7 oz of water a day besides what's already in their food. Just like your LO they decided they no longer like water & the prune purees just wasnt doing it.

So he told me add water to all their purees. He told me to give 100% prune juice, 100% apple juice or 100% pear juice without watering it down every time they had solids. After a week(i started doing this last monday) their poops started getting softer & easier for them to poop.
    Good luck.

  • Not sure you want to do this, but about a month go, I gave my daughter a pediatric glycerin suppository. She had been straining for 4 days without any poop so it was my last resort. Within in 10 minutes she pooped twice. The first time was very hard round solid balls.  Sorry if that's TMI. That's she cried while passing. I hated seeing her strain, so tht was my last resort, but it definitely worked!
  • Ok so my LO is going through this as well. I think we over did it on the yogurt and it constipated him. Really quick, does probiotics constipate anybody else's child? Because I've always noticed it does with my kids. I give my older two probiotics every other day because I notice it constipates them if I do it everyday.

Anyway, here's what helped for me! I've given my son anise tea since I stopped nursing (6 weeks pp) I mix his formula with it instead of water. Just his night bottle. My mom swore by it to help with upset stomach, constipation, gas and even helping him sleep (which ironically enough he's been a great sleeper since day 1, even through his growth spurts). Anyway about 2.5 weeks ago he had the stomach bug and had horrific diarrhea for over a week so I stopped the anise because I knew it would make it worse. I just got in the habit of not making it so he hasn't had it in a while. Last night I made him a bottle and this morning I did and he finally pooped! I really think it's the anise because I tried everything like you did. Pears, prunes, Vaseline in the butthole, nothing worked. I don't  know which is worse- mega diarrhea where I had to change his clothes everytime he pooped, or changing his clean dry diaper 20x a day because of poop pebbles!

I get get it from Arabic stores here but I do know health stores sell it too. They sell it by the ounce and you don't need much. I use a tablespoon in a kettle full of water. Boil and steep for 10mins and strain. I store it in a glass jar in the fridge and use what I need. I warm it up for my son. It tastes like black licorice.
  • I also add a tiny bit extra water in his bottles to help when he starts to have trouble.  This may sound silly but have you tried giving LO something to do with his hands while you do purees? Both of my boys liked to have puffs or something on the tray and I could get them to eat that way.
  • When little man gets constipated I use 2 ounces of prune juice in with his formula. I substitute it for water when mixing it. It's always worked.

  • I mixed a little of prune puree into his other purees for a few days and offered water a few times a day in his sippy cup.  Seemed to work!
