Frozen food recall for listeria

Heads-up: if you buy frozen veggies from Costco, Safeway or a number of other stores, there has been a massive recall due to possible listeria contamination. Listeria is serious business for pregnant women as it can cause miscarriage and still births.

I'm pissed. We will be throwing out a lot of stiff today as we buy a lot of frozen veggies from Costco, most of which have already been opened and eaten.

  • Thanks for the heads up, I just emailed it to my husband to go through our freezer. Scary!

  • I saw this and sent it to DH as well. This is so scary! All this listeria stuff seems to be getting out of control. I'm afraid to eat anything.
  • @bananers Exactly! It's been happening more and more with fruits and vegetables. And of course ice cream. I haven't heard of any cases with lunch meat or cheese recently.
  • @JournoGrl23 my RE actually told me to stay away from ice cream. He had a patient lose a baby to suspected listeria. It's terrifying.

  • Ugggg-- my daughter and I eat Trader Joes peas everyday and she's had stomach flu symptoms for the last week. She seems okay now. I was literally eating peas when I read this article. Anyone know how long symptoms take to show?

  • @bananers No ice cream?! I've eaten it several times this pregnancy. I crave it a lot. But I have been worried every time I eat it wondering if it's contaminated. My office holds a birthday thing each month and when I went to mine in March they served us blue bell ice cream and I ate it without thinking. I panicked for a week worrying I would get listeria since that was the one recalled for it.
  • @JournoGrl23 I probably wouldn't worry too much about it. I mean FFS, at this point you'd have to stay away from everything.

  • @bananers That's completely true.
  • @bananers, Costco has a bit of a strange return policy on food.  They only require you to return "a portion" of the product. I'm pretty sure they will give you a refund on anything you have already opened and not yet finished.

I'm pretty much living on ice cream, because vegetables- unless raw -have held no interest for me! Occasionally I use frozen veggies for stir fry, but thankfully none of my brands were on the list. I can't wait until I can have deli meat, sushi, wine and whatever else we aren't supposed to have!

  • I just got an automated call from Kroger also saying some of their sunflower seeds and salad toppers have also been recalled for Listeria. :-/

  • I'm super excited farmers market season started this week around here. Locally sourced food for the win.

Seriously though, we went through our freezer and one thing in there was contaminated - was a bag of peas we had marked "DO NOT EAT" because they serve as an ice pack, not food. It does make me wonder about what we already have eaten...

  • I just read an article that said around 100 snack foods have been recalled.

  • What should pregnant women eat if they are recalling so many things. Makes me afraid to buy anything bc cooking is supposed to get rid of most bacterias but apparently not this one.
  • This is getting rediculous. Between all these listeria recalls and the Zika virus it's a scary time to be pregnant.
  • ^for realz.

  • Don't eat anything and hide inside with mosquito nets and bug spray!!!  :s  I really need to buy some bug spray...
  • I'm just going to start microwaving everything I eat... Although there's no way in hell I'm giving up ice cream.

  • I'm just going to start microwaving everything I eat... Although there's no way in hell I'm giving up ice cream.
I will not be giving up ice cream either! I've just been staying away from Blue Bell after their listeria outbreak and hoping all the other brands are safe. I actually had some ice cream today after lunch and it was delicious.
  • I'm late to this but I thought the threat from ice cream was just from homemade stuff where there may be raw egg yolk. Commercially produced stuff should be safe, right??
  • All this ice cream talk makes me want to get a vanilla ice cream cone from McDonald's!!! I'm lovin' it!

Last year several people got sick and a couple died off bluebell... They were out of production for months tho to clean and sanitize. I'm keeping my ice cream!!! No way I'd survive the summer without it!!
  • Damn! I buy my broccoli from costco. And now I'm glad my spinach lasagna didn't sound good the other night, I skipped it and had mac n cheese instead lol. Looks like I need to throw  out my broccoli and anything I've premade with it :( I knew veggies were risky for Ecoli and listeria, but frozen veggies is bullshit. And I'm not giving up my dove ice cream bars! I have one every night. I think it's actually time for one now...
  • ....and the sunflower seeds I just used up (on salads) are on the recall list for snack foods. Great.
  • I had Velveeta shells and cheese for lunch. No veggies, sunflower seeds, or snacks. It was amazing! I may eat it everyday.  ;)
  • @jamiesc58 good call.. the kind that has whole wheat noodles is basically a health food right?
  • We should totally have a recalls thread - if someone spots a recall on a popular stroller for instance, or food... Maybe even a sticky as we get to the point we are actually depending on baby items for the health and safety of our little bundles in a few months...

  • Make your own ice cream!  It's super easy - we have our own backyard chickens so I know the eggs are fresh and not contaminated (but you could easily get a dozen fresh eggs from your local farmers market or roadside stand), and we have one of those little counter top ice cream makers that whips it together pretty quickly.  It's awesome, and then I don't have to worry!
Now if only I could have a whole farm of fresh produce... and afford to pay someone to plant/harvest/package it all for me... then we'd be golden!
  • Absolutely @texasmama2014! But I would watch for some recall on wheat lol.
  • I signed up for the FDA's food recall email alerts after @bananers first post and now I'm scared to eat anything. I think it's all because of the sunflower seeds, but still!

I've had Blue Bell several times this pregnancy. I figure they are probably hypervigilant about listeria now and they went through a massive cleanup, so it's probably safe right? Soft-serve fro-yo on the other hand... Nope. Not risking it.
  • I signed up for the FDA recall email list as well. Just want to let everyone know the frozen vegetable one spread to some brands at Kroger now (along with those snack products of course).
