WWYD nursery furniture.

I have my oldest daughters nursery furniture cause she is in a big girl bed and I refinished my husbands old dresser from when he was a kid. Now DD2 her dresser is a pile of sh*t has been from day one, the drawers don't close and I could rant all day about it. So I bought a cheap toddler bed and just refinished it, I am going to do my great grandmothers old dresser for her so she has a matching set.
Now aside from the chew marks on the crib, all the furniture from DD1 for the new baby are in great shape. I am feeling a little guilty for some reason that the crib is in kinda bad shape from the chewing marks so I thought about refinishing it, and the dresser?
Am I being crazy for thinking like this?
If you think I should paint it what color should I use? I use a non toxic chalk paint that is baby and preggo lady approved so the colours are endless, and we plan to paint his room anyways (which is a whole new delema of mine since the house is brand new it seems silly to paint fresh walls).

Re: WWYD nursery furniture.

  • The newest addition will probably chew on the crib as well...not sure it's worth the effort to refinish it for that reason. If you want to refinish so everything matches, I could understand that.

In terms of color suggestions. Everyone's got a different idea of their ideal nursery. I am in love with mostly grey and a little splash of a general specific color (if it's a girl, I'm going purple.) I would do something neutral on the furniture. Or wood tones.

  • I got a crib wrap for the top rail of DS's crib to keep him for chewing. I've seen people make them from fleece, use the bumpers that come with a bedding set, or even their old muslin swaddles. DS is keeping his crib most likely and being turned into a toddler bed so baby girl has to get a new crib but if not, I'd be passing it on with some bite marks and eventually buying a new wrap for the top rails.

I agree with the poster above me who mentioned chipping paint.

I refinished a crib for DD1! I painted it a beautiful mint green and still love it, almost can't wait to pull it out for this baby. So, no, you're not crazy. We sealed the crib well and it never chipped, but my DD was also not a big chewer.

It it did take a long time to do properly... Sanding, three coats of paint, two coats of sealer. It was a real pain to do, but worth it IMO.

  • I chalk painted and waxed my son's crib before he was born, but I did it several months in advance in order to let the wax really set and season. He hasn't chewed on the crib at all yet...8 teeth in...but if he had, I would have probably added one of the wraps previous posters have mentioned.
He HAS chewed on the coffee table (which has the exact same treatment as the crib,) a lot, and hasn't chipped it at all. Annie Sloane for the win!
  • If I wasn't going to convert DS crib into a toddler bed and just keep with him staying with that I would absolutely refinish it for the new baby! I love to refinish furniture and can't wait to find a dresser to refinish for their room! So I don't think it is crazy!
