Protein shakes & excercise

anyone have previous experience with what protein shakes are safe while breastfeeding? I would like to get some recommendations and then check them with my doctor and go from there. Also, anyone have good excercise tips or routines? Tonight I plan to try my first walk around the block and see how I feel.

My doctor said my Vega protein was fine. Whey protein in general isn't good when breastfeeding. Shakeology is also fine while BF'g.

It doesn't make sense why whey protein would be bad for breastfeeding...is it an allergy thing? If you have any more info on that I'd love to know. I was planning to restart my shakes in the next couple of weeks!

I think it's an allergy thing yes. I'd look it up but I'm currently at the hospital being monitored for contractions

I think you have much more important things to worry about then! Hope everything is ok

Thanks. But it was a false alarm. I just remember it being one of the things my BF'g instructor said we should limit. She mentioned it along with other things like diary, so I'm thinking it does have to do with potential allergies for baby. I tend to lean towards soy and veggie protein shakes so I wasn't tuning into the exact reasoning at the time.

I've been drinking plenty of milk (albeit lactose free) but also having icecream and cheese! You and baby both need the calcium. If they have an intolerance then they will have it. Avoiding it won't help. In fact my understanding is the more foods you avoid the more likely they are to develop allergies to it. We should investigate this further!

    glad all is well!
  • No idea if its BF safe or not (even though I BF my first for 6 months) but I don't see why not ... I love love love Intek brand chocolate powder for protein shakes. DH found it and it's seriously tasty! So many of them taste awful, I was thrilled to find one I actually like! I drink them all the time. And, while I agree it's best to consult your doctor (or pedi, that's who I was always told to ask for BF questions), I don't see what could be bad about protein and hydrating! Good luck mama! :)

Shakeology tastes so good, but my husband banned me from it when I tried it a year+ ago. It gave me the worst gas I've ever had, and when your own gas is running you out of bed and into the hallway, you know that it's time to stop consuming whatever the source is. Seriously, have you ever gotten teary eyed from smelling your own gas? Me either, until Shakeology.
When I was trying to get really ripped and drinking 3 protein shakes a day, someone recommended I mix up my protein shakes in the morning and sip on it throughout the day. Well, apparently whey protein starts to break down as soon as you mix it with water, and after drinking protein shakes that had been mixed up and sitting on my desk for several hours......it was horrific.

I wonder if the caution against whey is because some low quality mixes can have high levels of heavy metals? Also, some supplement companies can be pretty shady and their supplements don't have the ingredients they claim.

If anyone's interested, I really like www.truenutrition.com for protein powders. They have all kinds (vegan, whey, paleo, etc), are reasonably priced and pretty good quality. The only downside is they don't taste very good (which is actually a good thing, it shows there's not a bunch of artificial crap added for taste).

I don't think I would ever drink a protein shake slowly because of that reason. Have you ever forgotten a shaker in a vehicle or something for a few days (or longer) with a little protein left in it?  It is seriously the WORST smell in the entire world.
  • I've been doing Shakeology for most of my pregnancy and plan to continue during breastfeeding. Midwife said the nutrients are great. I love the way it makes me feel and helps with junk food cravings. My favorite flavor is Greenberry.

Agreed. I definitely don't think milk should be avoided, she said limit it. But that's all the info I have. Looking forward to more info about it.

Another option: I like to add a scoop of almond butter, tofu, hemp seeds, or avocado to my smoothies. Avocado in a berry smoothie is SO GOOD. Easy ways to add protein without a powder.
