Help 7 month old hates formula & will basically only accept a bottle while going to sleep or asleep

okay... Baby boy was born Sept 2015.  I breastfed almost exclusively and would only occasionally give Similac Breast feeding supplementation formula.  I never produced enough breast milk to pump/save up and give him in a bottle.  So in December when I wanted to try to supplement more with formula that is when the problems really started.  At first it took a while to find a bottle/nipple that he would accept.  He is on the low percentile weight wise and at his last two Ped visits, the doc has stressed that my baby must take more formula.  I am so stressed and upset. I have tried everything.  He started eating baby food in February and loves it.  He will eat the Gerber Oatmeal cereal mixed with formula.  He loves the Geber baby yogurt as well.  Starting at his bedtime when he is almost asleep he will usually take 5 oz of formula, then around 2 a.m. 5 more oz, and then 4 oz about at about 5 a.m. He takes these bottles while he is almost asleep or asleep.  Last week I had the "bright idea" of adding a few spoons of the baby yogurt to the formula bottle and he took it really well.   Essentially my 8 month-old refuses a bottle during the day and will only take it while he is sleeping.  Is anyone having or had similar issues as this?!

  • Also.... it breaks my heart that he will not accept formula during the day, when I am trying to coax him to accept the bottle, I can hear his little tummy gurgling like he's hungry. I have tried different formulas as well. He seems to tolerate each one we've tried and has only spit up like 3 times since his birth so I know he doesn't have any intolerance issues.

  • Mine just did this with breastmilk bottles.  First issue was an ear infection and then she decided she was to feed herself.  If she lays on a boppy and no one touches the bottle then she will take it. Good luck

You could try introducing a trainer sippy cup with formula and see if it makes any difference. We're just introducing one now with water so he can get the hang of it since most people recommend transitioning them away from bottles by a year anyways.

If you can't get him to drink his formula during the day, keep doing what you're doing and add it to oatmeal and yogurt, increasing the number of times you feed him or the amount you feed him each time until he's getting the amount of formula he needs each day. Hope you find something that works!
  • Was he taking the formula during the day really well with the baby yoghurt? My thought would be to keep adding the baby yoghurt try to add as little as possible. Or try adding a teaspoon or 2 of baby oatmeal and see if that does the trick. We have been struggling a bit with this with our daughter, but it's been a struggle since she was born for us. We started thickening her bottles when she was two months old because she was aspirating her formula and that really made a difference for us, although she is getting harder to bottle feed because she wants to play instead. We add 1 teaspoon of baby oatmeal to her 5 oz bottle: we've very gradually weaned her down because when we were given the ok to go back to non thickened formula, she wouldn't take it.
