Extreme Dizziness

I can't find the symptoms thread. Also I bet I'll get more answers this way anyway. Please excuse my clutter.

I just collapsed walking to the kitchen to get DD a snack. As in, I saw stars and fell to the floor. It was scary. My dizziness has gotten way worse this week and I don't know what to do about it. I know it's unlikely but now I'm super worried if that happened and I hit my head and blacked out or something what would happen to DD. Also I just can't stand up today. I've moved all the diaper changing stuff downstairs, and I can't carry DD up and down the stairs anymore because I'm afraid I'd collapse and drop her. For naptime she crawls up the stairs, and we scooch back down together with her sitting on my lap. She's not eating nearly as healthy food as usual because I'm just grabbing what's easy. This is easily the most debilitating symptom I've had with either pregnancy.

Anyone dealt with this too? Tips for being less dizzy, or at least for easy ways to fix healthy snacks for toddlers? Thanks in advance.

  • I'm sorry- how scary! I know dizziness is a PG symptom but might be worth a call to your OB, since you collapsed.

In terms of snacks, can you prep a bunch in the evenings after she's in bed and things are a little calmer? Slice fruits and veggies, cook frozen fish sticks or chicken nuggets, portion out cottage cheese and yogurt into little containers, etc. Having them at the ready seems key.

  • I had this problem with my first pregnancy. I fainted/collapsed a few times. I learned to always have quick access to sugar. I kept mini cans of coke in my purse and around the house. Quick liquid sugar boost. I had to always keep something in my stomach. I was always munching to keep from feeling dizzy. Nuts, trail mix, granola bars, etc.

I weirdly have not had the dizziness that bad this time around. I hope you feel better soon! That's always been a huge fear of mine (something happening to me and my toddler left alone to fend for himself)

Oh oh and no advice on the snacks. My toddler doesn't believe in snacks.  :s

  • If you're actually collapsing, you need to be seen by a medical professional ASAP. Please call your OBs after hours line if that's an option for you or go to a walk-in clinic.

Eat something sugary and drink a few glasses of water in case it's low blood sugar or low BP (had your BP been running low?) but please get seen. I have dizzy spells when I stand quickly but I have known low BP (100s/60s) so usually if I chug some water and take it slow, I'm okay. It may be benign, but it may be caused by blood pressure or heart issues that need intervention soon.

  • @muybuenogood ideas! Getting to the grocery store for produce is a whole other thing, but I think on Friday when my mom comes over I may have her drive me. I never thought to give her my yogurts though! That's a good solution too.

@katemr1146 I've been eating those little cups of peach pieces in juice, but coke is a good idea too! Thanks!!

I occasionally get dizzy, and have several times in the last few days. If I'm not by a wall or something sturdy I can grab, I've learned to sit/squat down quickly. Usually the stars fade, but sometimes it takes a minute. I have to stand up slowly then give myself a minute to adjust.

Are you drinking enough and eating enough yourself? It's often hard to remember to take care of ourselves when young children are demanding our everything. Also, your blood volume is increasing rapidly so your blood pressure is dropping as a result. Right about now is when dizziness is expected to peak, so hopefully it gets better soon.

As for less healthy snacks (or too much tv, or whatever anyone is worried about), this too shall pass and doesn't have to be your new normal. Survival mode for now until you're feeling better. Same goes for 3rd tri exhaustion and for having a newborn.
  • @comealongponds I actually conveniently have an OB appointment tomorrow morning. I will definitely ask her about it. My mom is coming by now to help until DH comes home so I think I'll be alright until I'm seen tomorrow. Historically I've tended to have pretty thin blood (low RBC and WBC counts) but I've never had anything done about it. I've also had trouble drinking water lately, although that's better the past few days so I'm trying to chug a bunch.

  • @DunkinDecaf that is convenient! Do you have any watermelon or cucumbers? High water fruit/veggies might help with you water intake, or juice? If you do start to get blurry vision, your best bet is to sit down wherever you are and put your head between your knees til it passes. Feel better!

Most definitely bring it up with your Dr. For me it was a symptom of a vitamin D deficiency, but it's also a symptom of a lot of other stuff as well.
  • Per above I'd go to the OB, could be normal, but could be more serious. GL tomorrow!

  • I totally feel you- I've been on the verge of passing out a few times, and have a history of this in the past from a combination of low blood sugar and low blood pressure. At work I keep lots of lifesavers and small candies to suck on all day (for just a bit of sugar), have been eating frequently in small amounts, and sometimes just have to sit down and rest a while. From previous fainting episodes, I know if you start feeling tunnel vision it's so close- get on floor and elevate legs to get more blood to your head and get some sugar in you.. Those are just my opinion but clearly your OB will have suggestions for you. I was told by mine to increase water intake even more than I had. I hope you feel better!!
