Progesterone Shots

Anyone else taking progesterone shots due to previous spontaneous preterm labor?  I went into preterm labor with my first at 33 weeks 5 days and was given magnesium to stop the contractions, but ended up delivering him a few hours later. In order to prevent this, I've been taking the progesterone shots weekly since 16 weeks and had one yesterday at 35 weeks 5 days.  I talked to my doctor about whether I will be getting another one at my next appointment (36 weeks 5 days) since you typically get them until 36 weeks.  We basically decided to reassess whether it would be necessary at that appointment. When specifically is anyone else taking them until and also, if you had taken them with a previous pregnancy, how quickly after stopping them did you go into labor?

I'm taking them this pregnancy and started at 16 weeks as well.  I asked my dr and I'll get my last one at the end of 35 weeks because that should carry me through week 36.  I had my son at just barely 34 weeks, so I'm in a bit of a grey area for getting them, but it's the only thing they have that might work, so they decided to go ahead and try.  I wasn't sorry to hear I'll be getting 20 shots instead of 21.  I'll do what I need to do, but they hurt and the side effects have been pretty rough.  It would be nice to hopefully have a brief respite from the nausea/headaches before I go into labor and resume my regularly scheduled puking and headache.

  • I am also getting them. This is my 4th child. My other 3 children were all premature (34, 35, and 36 weeks). Ill be 36 weeks Friday so I feel like the shots must be working because this so far is my 2nd longest pregnancy out of 4. My blood pressure is.now being an issue but I'm hoping for 37 weeks. I will be getting my last shot on Friday.

I was admitted last week for preterm contractions but they stopped with magnesium and they haven't started again.
  • FTM so no experience with previous pregnancies but I started the injections at 6 weeks and will go to 37 weeks having them twice per week. I have been having hives as an unpleasant side effect since February so I wouldn't hate if my doctor took me off of them a little early as long as it didn't cause LO to come early.

@jschlaud I tried googling the same question about how soon women typically deliver after getting off of the shots. The responses varied but from what I saw it was 1-2 weeks.

@Herzogc1 that is good to know.  I called my doctor's office this morning because I've had a little more cramping the last couple days and this baby has definitely shifted position to hang out lower and my back has been really hurting off and on.  Every single one of those things can be completely normal at 32 weeks, but I'm feeling a little hyper-aware these days, especially since a backache was my major sign labor was starting with my son and I REALLY want this baby to keep cooking until 37 weeks.  Also, if I have to go out on leave before May 19th, it will really mess up my leave and I really don't need that added stress.  I'm just really hoping the shots do their job.  I don't have to make it to 40 weeks, but skipping the NICU experience this time would be wonderful.
  • I am on the shots (just got one 3 hours ago) and I will be getting them for 2 more weeks, I think. I hope we all avoid the NICU experience this time!!!

I have had some pretty nasty side effects, including a serious allergic reaction to the oil they were using as a base at the beginning and I've had a couple people ask me if I was tempted to stop.  I just keep telling them that it would have to get a lot worse than this to make me think I'd prefer to just deal with another NICU experience and I know we got off relatively easy compared to what other families went through.  If I get to leave the hospital with my baby, I'll consider the shots a total success.

I had my first son at 34w6d, so I've been on progesterone since 16w for this pregnancy.  I have the nightly vaginal suppositories instead of injections because that's what insurance covered.  I will use the last one at 35w6d since they prescribe them for 16-36weeks.  I'm hoping this guy stays in until at least 37 weeks and that he can come home with me when I get discharged.

  • Leaving the hospital with my baby is my goal also. My 34 and 35 weeker both had problems eating.

FTM too, why do you have to get the shots without a hx of preterm labor?
