FLU!

***Been lurking for a week since I found out my due date is actually October***
Forgive me for this being my first post (other than my intro) as I know it breaks all etiquette but I just needed to moan and complain anonymously to the interwebs
My DH...my lovely DH...came home from work today and said "I feel like crap." Now, he's usually good for a man cold and called in sick yesterday because he had a tummy ache (I really want to see a man be pregnant someday) so I did my usual eye roll and ignored him (I'm horrible...I know) while I continued to make dinner for us and DD.  I finally got to a point where I could stop and took a look at him laying on the couch.  Geez, he sure looks pale.  So I went and got the thermometer (because when asked if he thought he had a fever, his response was "How am I supposed to know?")  And low and behold, it was 101.5.

I banished him to the den and proceeded to bleach everything he touched.

Checked him again an hour after some Ibuprofen (God, do I miss that stuff).  Now it's 103.  EFFFFFFF!
I feel bad for him.  I really do. BUT ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME??? IT'S MAY!  We got our flu shots.  And of course he gets the flu.
I'm taking bets on how long before DD comes down with it.  But secretly?  I hope it's the strain we got last year (DD and I) and that we are immune.  I CANNOT GET THE FLU RIGHT NOW!

**end vent**

subnote:  I know it's not the end of the world - though it is risky for me to get the flu - I'm just really whiny about it and got tired of bleaching and needed to complain. Thanks for listening.  Back to Cloroxing my life.

Sorry your husband is sick. However, it could be a lot of things other than the flu.

  • I am just now on the tail end of having it! (still coughing up gunk) It hit me all of a sudden like a ton of bricks a week ago and I haven't had the flu in ALMOST 10 YEARS!!! Even got the dang flu shot last November. No idea where I got it from, but it knocked me on my ass.  Haven't had one sick day in 18 months and my boss TOLD ME to stay home. Nurse at my OB office said she's seen it hit quite a bit despite being so late in the season. I got an Rx for Tamiflu, had to take Tylenol round-the-clock til my fever broke, and the only thing that would clear up my head was Sudafed (I only took half the prescribed dose). So much for a drug-free pregnancy  :(

Fx you or DD don't end up with it!! Pat on the back for steps already taken against it  :)
  • The flu is coming thru with a vengeance super late this year! I think there are definitely some strains popping up that weren't covered by the shot for this go-round. I hope he feels better soon, stays hydrated and such. I believe tamiflu can be helpful if you start taking the medication at the first onset of symptoms? But a lot of people make the individual choice to ride it out rather than medicate (unless they're elderly, have asthma, COPD, etc and may develop complications). And I hope the rest of your family avoids catching the bug! :)

  • My husband had it last week.  Luckily I didn't catch it  -- I got a flu shot and he didn't so I wonder if that made the difference.  Hoping some of my luck rubs off on you!

DH had the flu this winter and I didn't catch it. DD had just come off a week of pneumonia when he got it, so hard to say if she was affected.

I heard rumour that this year's flu shot was not particularly effective. No source for that, but there has been a huge number of families hit with it in my area.

  • @simcal18 If you end up getting sick again, I am sending you a private MD and plastic bubble!
  • My husband got the flu and gave it to me when I was 9 weeks pregnant.. My first time having the flu. We all survived. FX you won't get it!
  • Thanks all for the support. You're making me feel better! In the scheme of life, this isn't a big deal but I appreciate your thoughtful responses.
  • Just FYI - the word "flu" is thrown around to cover an entire range of illness. True influenza (the kind you got vaccinated for) is a respiratory illness *only*. Therefore, if it's a vomit/diarrhea bug (you mentioned tummy ache) then regardless of vaccine effectiveness this year, you will not be protected - other than meticulous cleanliness (which it sounds like you are taking care of).

Flu is definitely sticking around late this year, as is norovirus (a notorious GI bug). Either way, stay hydrated, take tylenol to keep fevers down (if you do get sick) and good luck!
  • @NoraAurora yup I know that. It's the real flu. Fever, body aches, etc. his tummy ache was indigestion. Thanks though!
  • I had the flu at 8 weeks. It was miserable but I made it. I even had to do Motrin at the rec of my dr because my fever wouldn't respond to Tylenol. Hope it skips you!

You are so sweet @allythekid!  I am feeling better with just a lingering cough but please send bubble to my house anyway.  After finally feeling mostly over flu I had to take DH to the ER night before last with a kidney stone!!!!!  It feels like all this junk will never end.  Hopefully we're just getting it all out of our systems now and will be healthy going forward through the new year!
