Is it normal?

Hello mommy's to be(again or first timers!). Has anyone else expierenced kicking so hard that you actually twitched or jumped alittle? It has been happening quite a bit at night lately, mostly once I get settled in bed, or if I'm laying down watching a movie or something. It really catches me off guard. I'm starting to wonder if it's maybe Braxton Hicks. My ob hasn't addressed this yet. I am 26 weeks today

Re: Is it normal?

  • Braxton Hicks are more like muscle contractions that just make your belly hard. At worst, they should be mildly uncomfortable, but not make you jump. Baby is getting strong, and I know my little one sometimes makes me twitch when she gets me in a good spot. Nothing to worry about! It's good that your tiny tot is kicking hard!

  • i get them once in a while too, just have good strong kickers :)
  • Baby may have hiccups, those always make me jump at first.
  • Yes. It usually happens when I'm relaxing, like you said. Baby is just kicking harder or in a different spot than normal. No big deal.

Like PP said, these aren't Braxton Hicks. BH contractions are more like a tightening sensation in your lower belly. I started getting those a few weeks ago and I get them every couple of days. It's a totally different feeling.

  • I've gotten some hard kicks in a couple areas that either makes me twitch or jump and actually shout a little because it catches me by surprise. I love it when that happens! Makes me feel good to know I have a strong little girl in there.

Yup!  Tons with DD and so far I've had a few this time.  It's almost so hard that it feels like it comes from the outside.  The other day I actually thought DD had elbowed me or something, but when I turned, because it made me go "ow" and jump, she was nowhere near where I felt it lol.  BH will be more than just a quick feeling, it'll last at least several seconds, if not minutes, and it'll be your whole tummy feeling tight.  The two are very distinct feelings.

Yea I have been caught by surprise before.
  • Yes! Noticeable movement in the bump with kicks starting yesterday, up high near my belly button.  And, new static nerve pain that has me hobbling, and more frequent bathroom breaks.  Wondering if baby has turned from transverse and that's explaining the newfound sensations!
  • I thought it was just me! I have seriously jumped a few times! My boy is breech right now, so he kicks hard at my bladder (and I SWEAR he kicked my cervix because it HURT and made me jump like crazy!). So I think it's totally true and normal for kicks to make you jump!! I end up laughing about it though!

  • Thanks so much ladies for all the input! This was my first time posting and I didn't nearly expect as much feedback as I received...you all rock!
  • I actually  had one kick that was so hard it actually hurt a little! Our babies are getting bigger and stronger, and their kicks reflect that
