Recommendations for swings

So, I have been looking at and researching swings a bit today, and I'm blown away by the cost of some of them! I was wondering what any of you ladies have, or have on your registries. We had a swing for our oldest, and then used it with DS2, until it broke. I can't remember what it was but I'm thinking I might want one that swings both side to side and back and forth this time.. Any suggestions?

Re: Recommendations for swings

  • I don't have any experience with baby swings as I am a FTM, but I did read up a lot on baby gear before registering. We decided to go with the automated rock n play. Mostly because of the reviews and how much little space it takes up. I'm hesitant to shell out money on a swing because I have heard that some babies hate them and then what do you do with it? I'm curious too if any STMs have some suggestions.

I'm with you on that... I know DS1 didn't mind it, and DS2 LOVED it! I'm nervous that DS3 will hate it!!! LOL That's one reason why I was thinking of maybe going with one that swings all directions this time...hoping that if he doesn't like one direction, he'll be cool with the other. I'm going cross eyed reading reviews and specs on these things!!!
  • DD was pretty neutral on the swing. The bouncer she really liked so I have a swing that can also detach into a bouncer saved on Amazon. It's a fairly cheap one and I'd rather have one that can be both.
  • The swing was the only thing DS1 would nap in as a newborn. We had the Fischer Price My Little Snugabunny. It rocked both front to back and side to side, and also played music and had a mobile that spun. I think it was around $120?

    Just keep swimming.
  • Ours is a Chicco. DS loved it. It swings in multiple directions, and you can detach it from the base to make it portable.
  • We have a cheapo fisher price one. I think it cost $30-40. DD loves it for months! Hated bouncers.
  • We borrowed one from a friend and DD loved it so much that we went out and bought it when she needed it back. I think it depends on your baby though. We spent around $170 ok it. It was the Fisher Price Lullaby Lamb (or something like that). It now floats between friends. Totally worth it for us but I think it just depends. I liked it because it was a bigger seat than the mamaroo. It definitely takes up a ton of space though.

  • Thanks for all the recommendations. I ended up going with a Graco one that I found on sale for about $70. I almost hated to even spend that much, since this is our last baby, but it got great reviews, so... Hopefully we'll recoup some of the cost from some of this baby gear after this little guy is finished with it. Not that I'm in a hurry to have that happen.... I'm just saying, since this is our third baby and our youngest is now 6, we had gotten rid of everything, so we had to buy all new stuff. Even though we are having a small shower, I felt weird adding big stuff to the registry.
  • I just bought a swing from a garage  sale this week, and a jumper. They are both in great shape, and the swing goes 2 ways. It's big, but it won't be around too long so I don't  mind!  I couldn't bring myself to spend over $100 on something  I know we won't use again as this baby is our last, and there were other big things I had to have brand new, like crib, monitor, carseat, stroller and bassinet. But I'm with you, I'm hoping to be able to sell a lot of it.
  • I registered for a rock n play and a mamaroo.. I'm planning on using the rock n play next to my bed for sleeping and the mamaroo in the living room - my neighbors got one for their niece and she swore by it and they really want to get it for us but, I honestly wouldn't have put it on the registry if they didn't want to get it for us.
  • The Fisher Price cradle and swing was recommended highly so I registered for it along with a rock n play. If we don't receive it as a gift, I'll get one off of Craigslist to try out. I'm not thrilled at buying one for full price if we already have an automatic rock n play.
  • We have this one, just in a different color pattern.  https://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/Fisher-Price-reg-My-Little-Lamb-trade-Cradle-N-39-Swing-w-AC-Adapter/1040834122?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=fisher price lamb swing&device=c&mcid=PS_bing_nonbrand_furniture_  DD didn't really have an opinion about it, I think we used it maybe 5 times.  She preferred the cheap bouncer that I got just so it would fit in the bathroom when I would shower lol.  It was similar to this, just different designs. https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-BMM96-Baby-Bouncer-Luminosity/dp/B00IVNEFCM/ref=sr_1_7_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1462384625&sr=8-7&keywords=fisher+price+bouncer  We also have a rock n play, that I just got rid of because it was too dangerous, and another larger plush fisher price bouncer that wasn't as much fun apparently haha.  Oh, and we also have a mamaroo.  DD could take or leave that, too. - we actually got that because it doesn't take up much space and it's light weight, so we took it on vacation with us.  We kept everything except the rock n play just because we didn't know what subsequent babys' preferences would be.

  • My plan is to register for all the baby gear we could possibly need (FTM mom here), and pick which swing, etc. based on internet reviews.  People want to buy gifts for baby, so might as well give them a wide selection! If we get to August and there's missing pieces on some of the nice to have but probably not necessary (swing, bouncer, etc) that we didn't get off the registry, I'll post on NextDoor and see who in the neighborhood wants to part with one.  People are constantly posting wanting to get rid of such things after their kids outgrow it, and I'd rather pay $20 for a bouncer baby boy may or may not like before I buy one brand new myself.
