1st Trimester

1st Trimester Weight

Just out of curiosity how much weight did you gain during your first trimester? (Or lose?)

Re: 1st Trimester Weight

  • It's different for everyone. Some gain, some lose, and some stay the same for the most part. 1st tri, I think I gained a total of maybe 10 pounds? But I was also still figure skating a lot, I was working out daily, and was really trying to limit my weight gain as I was at an ideal weight at the time (I had literally JUST gotten married when we conceived. Oops.)

You ou should ask your dr what their goal is for you, max weight gain that is, and go off that instead of what us internet strangers are doing :)

    Happy and healthy 9!!

  • I am, they said gain 25 to 35 total but didn't have any more info. Just gauging about how much is normal for the first trimester when additional calories aren't as needed.

  • Well heres how I put it. I went backwards. In the last trimester, more specifically the last 6-8 weeks, baby will put on upwards of a half pound per WEEK. Factor that into what you feel is an ok gain. Additional calories are always needed in pregnancy, especially the first tri. So don't be afraid of putting too much on right now. Make healthy choices, eat proper snacks and stay hydrated, as well as keep exercising. Stay physically active will help you towards the end of your pregnancy as well as with labor. I have just under 6 weeks left and the last month I've been fairly lazy when it comes to staying active and my body is hating me for it, despite eating right for the majority of my 9 months.

  • "Normal" is relative in pregnancy, especially in regards to weight. Some people loose, some people gain, some people stay the same through first tri. I lost a lot for the first 6 months because I had killer morning sickness, and then I gained 30 pounds in the last 3 months. My OB was perfectly fine with my weight. Your OB is really the only one who can tell you if your weight is okay for you or not.

This. Thank you for putting my thoughts into words because words are hard :) lol.

OP, never go off of what someone else did during their pregnancy. :)

  • Dr Google says 3-5 lbs of weight gain in the first trimester is "normal" or average.  My own OB office said their goal is for people to not lose more than 3-5 lbs in the first trimester.

I had disastrous morning sickness too and lost a fair bit of weight until my body got its sh#t together at 20 weeks.  I was monitored by my OB to make sure the baby was growing okay and we had a contingency plan if things didn't turn around by 20 or so weeks.  In the past 12 weeks, I've regained all I lost plus some more but my doctor isn't concerned with the rapid increase due to my individual circumstances.  In the end, if you need a solid number, ask your doctor.  They know your body much better than we do.
  • I lost 6lbs due to morning sickness

  • at my 16 week appointment I had only gained 6lbs.  I wasn't sick or anything.  Buuuuut then the holidays happened, and when I went in for my AS at 18 weeks my weight gain went up to 11lbs.  So 5lbs in 2 weeks.  Whoops. :)

totally different for everyone - I wound up gaining 28lbs total and delivering at 39+6.  But I have friends that have gained much more and much less than me and have had totally healthy babies, and gone back to their pre-pregnancy weight eventually, so really it's nothing to stress about.  Just try to be as  healthy as you can and let your body do what it's going to do.

  • With my first baby I lost 15 lbs (horrible MS), which I gained back very quickly in the rest of the pregnancy (and then some!).  With my second baby I gained about 5 lbs first tri.

  • I gained only 4-5 in the first trimester. By the end of my 2nd I had a total of 16 I believe.  I gained another 7 in the third before I had my son.  I delivered at 34 weeks, but my total weight gain at delivery was 23lbs.
  • My ob said 0-5 pounds in the first trimester, and better 0 then 5. However, it's hard to control, since weeks 6-20 I could barely eat anything besides cup of noodles, applesauce, and pbj sandwiches. I think I gained 4.

I was up 12 lbs (yikes!) when I weighed in at my appointment a week ago. I weighed myself today and I am now only up 7 lbs. I'm happy that I didn't really gain THAT much, but the sudden weight loss is also screwing with my PGAL. I have half a mind to call my doctor and make sure that's okay, but deep down I know it was water and I'm less bloated now and it's fine.

  • Just an update, after yesterday's weight in I have so far gained 4 pounds total in the 1st trimester, no morning sickness and extreme hunger the whole time!

  • Don't put a lot of emphasis on not gaining weight, or even if you do. The most important thing is that you're healthy and your baby is healthy and growing. It will all even out in the end.

I've actually lost 7lbs over the past 2 weeks, but I'm barely 6 weeks along. I've been dieting and exercising though, so I'm not too worried.

  • I lost 3lbs from week 5 to week 7. Lots of eating, but with the diet change from pop 24/7 to water and juice I was kind of expecting a little loss or not that much of a gain.
