EBF dairy free mamas

At LO's 2 month apt the doc verified that he likely has a dairy sensitivity and advised me to eliminate dairy, soy, and whey protein. I started reading labels and realized that stuff is in EVERYTHING! Anyone else in the same boat? Do you have a favorite meal that you've been making? And most importantly, did cutting dairy products seem to make a difference? I know it's pretty common for breastfeeding mamas, and am curious as to others' experiences.

Re: EBF dairy free mamas

  • Try to Google "MSPI moms", "MSPI snacks", etc to find some good info/tips. Many paleo recipes will also be ok. Generally speaking, you'll have to avoid most processed foods. It's hard at first, but you can do it!

  • Probably not what you want to hear...but cutting out dairy or soy didn't work for me. I actually went as far as to cut out dairy, soy, gluten, and eggs. Nothing worked- my baby still had bloody stools and was so sick. He is now drinking Alimentum (a hypoallergenic formula) and doing so much better!
  • @Cherylaf83  Hello! I am having a successful story for you! ! My baby is  10 weeks old, and she is happy and healthy and EBF.!!
when she was 2 weeks old she started to have green mucus and blood on her stool!! (a lot of blood ) it was super scary, I took her to the emergency room!  And she was diagnosed with  an intolerance to milk, and soy, and they
  • Told me to change my diet, and I did, and she continued to bleed, the diet wasn't working! ! I went to see the allergist, and he told me to stop eating grains to including rice milk!  So no more, corn, wheat, no grains at all, including flour, it is hard but you can do it! ! I am doing it for 7 weeks !!! The only things that he told me to eat, is chicken, turkey, all vegetables, and fruitshe ,and water, I lost 43 pounds, but my baby is doing great! ! No more bleeding  !!! And she is happy and healthy!  If you have any questions or if you need help or support, I am here to help you!  God bless you and your baby ! Take care.
  • I forgot to tell you that I used the  nutramigen formula! Until My body was getting rid of the milk protein and the allergens, but it is optional!  If you have more questions let me know!  Take care!
  • @Charlottesmotherseven Thanks for sharing your experience! And that's amazing you lost so much weight from the diet! It basically sounds like you had to go paleo. I've been dairy free for a week but only a few days free of soy and, though LO's poops are still loose with mucus in them, the color seems to be returning to a yellowish/brown which I'll take as a good sign.

@molliemcguire Did you ever find out what he was allergic to? Glad he's doing better!
  • @Cherylaf83 , we never figured it out. I wanted to breastfeed, but my health already wasn't great after his birth (I had a fever for 7 weeks without stopping), so for both of us, we went to the formula. Introducing solids later this year will be a little scary- we will hold off as long as possible!

I had to go dairy free. She was projectile vomiting several times a day, screaming and had lots of green poop. I tried adding it back in to confirm and yep no dairy for us. It's definitely hard. It's really in everything. I even read hot dogs and lunch meat have it. I eat a lot of hard boiled eggs, fruit, broccoli slaw, chicken, water lol. I actually make my own "cookies" for breakfast: oatmeal, almond milk, brown sugar, whatever fruit I have, egg whites!
  • Lurking from A15 but my 10 month old was diagnosed with a dairy/soy intolerance when she was 3 weeks old. I ended up having to cut dairy/soy/wheat/nuts/eggs. At 10 months old, I've only been able to reintroduce wheat and nuts. I basically live on meat, fruit, veggies. Snacks are usually fruit, popcorn (love Skinny Pop), chips, things like that. Another thing: Chipotle is dairy/soy free as long as you don't get cheese or sour cream and Wendy's nuggets and fries are dairy soy free. Cutting those foods made all the difference. I recently tried reintroducting cheese and she immediately became congested and screamed non-stop for 3 days. It was horrendous.

  • I had to give up all dairy and eggs.  The doctor first told me to eliminate major dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream), but I could still eat "hidden dairy"--if you google ingredients to stay away from due to dairy allergies there are tons!  After that didn't work, I eliminated all dairy.  The trick is to be creative.  Coconut milk can be used to in place of a lot dairy, as can almond or cashew milk.  You should check out So Delicious products--they have yogurt, ice cream, etc--all dairy free.  Health food stores are a great place to look as well.  I still can't find a great alternative for dairy free cheese, so I just avoid it.  The hardest part is butter (I use coconut oil as sub), but if you go out, butter is everywhere.  So be careful if you eat at a restaurant.  GoDairyFree.org is a great resource.  Good Luck!

BTW my dr said it takes about 1 week for everything to clear out of your system.
