Trip to the ER/Labor & Delivery last night...

So last night, after my husband and I came home from dinner, I went to pee and get ready for bed. Five minutes later, I felt like a slow warm discharge leak out. I looked at my underwear and they were soaked. Alarmed, I went to put on another pair and they were beginning to get just as wet. This was odorless, clear water stuff. We took off to the ER to check if it was my water. While in the restroom changing into a hospital gown, I leaked and dripped the fluid. The nurse did a swab test and it was negative - NOT the amniotic fluid. She checked my cervix and estimated 1cm dilated. My OBGYN arrived and noticed I was very wet and that my cervix was mushy. He swabbed again and it was negative. He did say the nurse's estimate was off and I was actually 2-3cm. However, he said he felt the sac still and even lifted baby's head and no fluid rushed out. My urethia (spelling) was checked and it was not pee so he estimated that it was my mucus plug, liquifying and coming out. He was also concerned that I was having contractions 3-4 min apart but that I felt NOTHING. No pain.

Hence, I was kept overnight at the hospital and the monitor showed NO contractions all night long. The leaking stopped but started again when the nurse re-examined me. I'm still 2-3 cm dilated, still mushy cervix except now she's seeing more mucus discharge. Still no contractions (I really don't know what those are supposed to feel like!) so the OBGYN sent me home and just follow up on Tuesday.

I'm a nervous wreck. Right now, I do feel more discharge but it's not a leak. And I'm so afraid of going into labor and not realizing it since I felt nothing last night. How long now before I go into labor? I'm only 36 weeks.

  • There's no telling. Some women are dilated for weeks before going into labor. If you soak a pad in an hour, then call your OB again (at least I believe that is the general consensus).

  • I would recommend calling before going in (save yourself a charge if you can!) because the nurse will contact your OB or inform you of what to look for, when to come in, etc.

This is what I was told. If I get to that point I'm supposed to call my midwife and then go in to be checked.
  • Just try to rest and relax over the weekend.  You will feel the contractions start up if you are truly going into active labor.  Remember that your doctor is only a phone call away!

  • I did call and I was advised to go to the ER to get a swab test. It was only supposed to be that but my doctor really wanted me to stay for observation.
  • Seemed reasonable that your Dr. wanted you to stay.  Babies can keep you guessing!  It's wacky not being in control of things and just playing the waiting game, but think of it as bonus time to get more stuff done (sorry, I always have a never ending 'to-do' list).  Good luck!
  • I had a small rush of fluid right after I had just urinated. Of course, I'm in Costco and my hubby just went into the restroom. It felt bigger than it was...but nothing since. Kinda odd. I'm waiting for it to happen again before I go in. Found out the hard way my LD trips are quite pricey!
