Anyone paying out of pocket for verify/harmony test?

Hi all,

So I think I am going to have to make this decision on Thursday at my appointment but I would love your insight. Here is a bit of our back story.
I have 2 healthy kiddos (3 and 2) but at my 20 week anatomy scan with both of them we found out they had choriod plexus cysts on their brains. They are basically not harmful on their own, but can be markers for Trisomy 18. We had already done an NT scan with low chances of any trisomy with both kids, but did end up having to follow up with a high risk dr for a more in depth ultrasound mostly to make sure there were no other markers seen, and there were not.

So this time around (since apparently I have a tendency to grow babies with cysts on their brains) we are considering getting one of the free cell DNA tests done so that we will know more definitively. Despite my history, we apparently do not qualify to have these tests covered, but out of pocket I have been told is $200-300. Yes it's expensive, but has gone down in price and doesn't put it out of the realm of what we could afford.

What at do y'all think? Is it worth it to do? Has anyone had it done before? Or am I just being overly worried about this all?

  • We might.  I don't have any history to support it and I'm not AMA, but DH really wants to get it done because it is more reliable than the other screening.  But we have to have our NT scan and talk to a genetic counsellor before making any decisions I think (which is probably for the best).

FWIW, when my SIL was pregnant the baby had some kind of marker for Down's on her anatomy scan and, because of that, her insurance covered the free cell DNA testing.

  • My understanding is that the free cell dna is only and option around 10 weeks. We were told at our anatomy scan we were too late for it. Thad part of the problem, I have been told after the NT or anatomy scan you are too late to do a free cell DNA test.

  • That's weird.  I thought it had to be done after 10 weeks, but there was no end point.  My SIL definitely had it done after her anatomy scan.  I was told that if my NT scan came back abnormal, my insurance would probably cover the cell free DNA testing.
  • That's really helpful to know! It was close to 3 years ago when I was having my last anatomy scan so it sounds like it could have changed and some good questions to ask.
    thanks!

  • My doctor said we most likely will have to pay oop for it and he said it's no more than $300 but they said they will submit I through insurance just in case. See If your doctors will even do that.

  • My doctor said my insurance may cover due to my age but if it doesn't we will pay oop for the test. If there are problems then I want as much time to prepare and research as I can get.
  • We will be paying to have it done at 10 weeks.  We're in Canada, and it starts at $550, but for us, the cost is worth the peace of mind.  It's fairly new here, and will at some point be considered the gold standard, but not yet. I'm 38 and it still isn't covered.
