Anyone done hot yoga during pregnancy?

Hello all,

Just wondering if any ladies have done hot yoga during their pregnancy and if so, for how long? I am a long-time hot power yogi and have done a lot of reading out of interest. I am  well aware that some advise not to continue hot yoga, however there is little to no research on the safety/dangers of it. I've met many women at my studio who fully practiced the entire length of their pregnancy (keeping in mind they had already been regulars far before becoming pregnant) and swore by yoga for muscle strength, flexibility, help with labor, breathing, etc. So would love to hear from anyone with experience. Happy Wednesday!

Re: Anyone done hot yoga during pregnancy?

  • Hi! I love hot yoga and practiced multiple times a week before finding out I was pregnant. I actually was dressed to go to a hot yoga class the night I found out we were pregnant and didn't wind up going because we went to celebrate with dinner instead. My OB as well as the perinatal specialist I had to have a consult with due to being high risk recommended I did not continue hot yoga during pregnancy, however I have seen pregnant women in some of my bikam classes. I was however told prenatal yoga, non heated is ok. I would ask your OB and see what their recommendation is based on your pregnancy and health history.

  • I love yoga, but I don't think I would risk hot yoga.  Besides it not being recommended, I tend to get really winded and experience hot flashes (where I feel like I'm going to faint) and I just don't think that would be a great environment!  I would ask your OB just to be sure!

  • I'm a hot yoga instructor and taught right up to when my son was born . . . prematurely. There's no way of knowing if that had any connection but I know I probably pushed my body a little too far despite having taught and practiced hot yoga well before pregnancy. The concern with the heat is your body's core temperature is important during pregnancy and there's a small window of where it is safe for baby. Also hydration is a concern. My midwife recommended I drink something with electrolytes in it the days I taught hot yoga so I constantly drank coconut water. Ultimately you know your body best and what's right for you and baby!
