Frenectomy Procedure

Apologies in advance if this is a repeat discussion.

At 7.5 months, I took my baby for a lip/tongue tie evaluation and the pedi dentist confirmed that he would greatly benefit from a frenectomy.

I'm looking for any experience with this procedure - positive or negative. I don't know anyone who has done this and just want to know what to expect.

Many months ago, I I told our pedi I suspected this and he missed it, but that's neither here nor there except to explain why we may be doing this procedure so late.

Sorry for the long post. I'm just hoping to gain some insight into what to expect after the procedure. Joshua's frenulum will be cut by laser, a 30 second procedure then we will need to do exercises 5x a day for 5 weeks.

Any and all insight is appreciated and thanks!

Re: Frenectomy Procedure

  • We had it done by at 2 months! We had it done by our ENT. It took about 3 weeks for me to notice a difference breastfeeding! Not sure what your reason for getting it done. But there are many reasons you can have it revised! 5 months later and I'm very thankful that I us it revised! Good luck mama!

  • We had it done at about 3 months, to address nursing issues, by a pediatric dentist who used a laser. Doc was great, super calming, and we had a great experience (as good as we could anyway, considering they were lasering his mouth). I noticed a difference immediately. We'd been heavily dependent on a nipple shield but immediately after the procedure we were able to nurse on the right side without any pain and within about a week weened off the shield on the left. Frenectomy is also a good preventative measure to address pain, gum recession, and other problems that could occur with teeth later in life. Baby hated the exercises. For me, doing those 5x a day was way worse than the actual procedure.

  • We had it done at 4.5 weeks old (not laser, but snipping with a surgical scissor). I was really nervous, but it was so quick! LO cried for one second and then I nursed him immediately and he totally forgot about it. He always had a good latch, even prior to the procedure, but I did notice a difference afterward when breastfeeding (less pinching). We didn't have to do any types of exercises afterward, and it's healed perfectly.

I'm not sure what the differences would be between getting it done now vs when they were younger, other than it may be harder to keep baby still during the procedure now that they're older, and breastfeeding may feel slightly different to the baby after the procedure now that baby has been nursing a certain way for so long.

Getting it done now though would definitely be preferable to waiting (when it would be even harder and would probably require anesthesia). Our LO was breastfeeding fine, but we were concerned about the possible speech development issues he may encounter later if we didn't do the procedure.

    Good luck! :)

  • Thank you, Ladies! You are all saying what I've been hoping/thinking the case would be. I see no reason why not to do the procedure, but I don't want to jump into something without knowing the negatives. So far, I can't see any negatives.

Am I missing anything? I'm very appreciative of this. It's nice to ask you all these questions.

I have a very slight tongue tie ... it's not anywhere near how bad my LO's was (his went to the very tip of his tongue), but it's enough so that I can't stick my tongue out very far and can't roll my "R's" ... thank goodness I didn't study Spanish! ;)

When I was in high school, my dentist recommended getting mine snipped (not sure why), but said I may need to relearn how to speak ... umm what?! Yeah, not doing that in high school when it doesn't cause me any issues! So I definitely think taking care of it now before your baby is learning to talk is so worth it, especially because you never know if not doing it would cause speech issues down the road.

Like I mentioned, I was super nervous and it was harder on me than it was on him! The procedure is so quick and the recovery was so fast (he seemed fine immediately after and had no ongoing pain either). I'm very glad we had it done. Watching him cry with his tongue "tied down" essentially just looked bothersome! Plus, I know he'll appreciate it later in life when he starts making out with all those ladies ;) Hahaha.
