November 2016 Moms

High fetal heart rate

I'm freaking out. At 9weeks the HR was 185. Today at 11 weeks (measuring 2 days ahead at 11.2) it was 181.

The resident I saw first told me it's a sign my baby has arrhythmia and if it's high again next week I'll be sent to a hospital for monitoring.

I of course just burst into tears and just as I  did my doctor walked in and told me HE'S not overly concerned and I should just relax. But I'm still to come back next week.

Ive been googling it and can't find much, but I did see someone's story that their baby had a high FHR and was dx with trisomy 13.

I thought I was nearing the end of the stressful time of pregnancy, but NOPE!!!

  • It doesn't sound super high to me, but I'm an engineer, not a doctor. My babies have regularly had heartrates 178ish in utero which isn't far off from 181 and no one has ever been concerned. Trust your doctor and do your best not to worry. And unfortunately the worry never ends as a mom.
  • My son was always right around 177-179, and there was never a concern voiced to me about it. FX it's all good! Hang in there mama

  • I agree with PP, 181 doesn't seem high to me at all.

I'm as guilty of this as anyone, but stay away from Dr Google. For every good story, you're going to read 10 bad and then all the internet posters responding "well my cousin has this symptom and it meant this." It's a never ending rabbit hole. I'd trust your Dr and try to forget the resident said anything. Think of it this way- your Drs been around and seen a lot, this resident has examined far fewer cases!
  • My baby's heart rate was 185 at 8 weeks and in the 160s this week at 12 weeks. I actually asked my doctor about the high heart rate because it was so much higher than what other people posted here and she said it was normal this early on and nothing to worry about.

  • I think my nuggets hrt was around 179bpm at 8 weeks. My OB said that sometimes means its a girl. I wouldn't worry. But for the record @laurenlalap I can't remember now if you've posted about having other kids, but concern for your little love is just the way it is from here on out. Forever.
  • My daughter always had a high heart rate. 177.178. 179. No one ever seemed concerned. She turned out just fine. A little high strung though  :p
  • At one of our last ultrasounds my baby's heart rate was 180 or 181. No one seemed concerned or said anything. It's ranged from around 176 - 180 except for the very beginning. Also, the heart rate theory is wrong for us because we're having a boy.

  • I'd say, if your doctor isn't overly concerned- try not to be yourself.  I did that last pregnancy over something else and it was never an issue.

  • DD's heart rate was always in the 175-180 range when I was pregnant with her. She's totally healthy. When they measured the heartbeat of this little bean and it was only 158 I actually freaked out for a minute because it was so much slower than DD's had been so I assumed it was too slow. I'd echo PP's; if your dr isn't worried, everything's ok. Also avoid dr google. He's an asshole.

  • At our appointment this past Wednesday our babys heartbeat went up to around 172 at one point and I asked the dr. if that was too high and she said "I was pushing pretty hard on baby, its not unusual for it to be high like that." I don't really know how that works but she didn't seem concerned at all. I agree with PPs, if your doctor wasn't concerned then I wouldn't be either. Hang in there, this whole being a mom and worrying about our baby stuff every minute of every day isn't easy!
  • @laurenlalap i hope you get a better answer soon but it is hard to believe they can diagnose anything with a single elevated HB rate and it is not much higher than my LO(176) and other PPs here. I know it is so easy to say but try not to worry. I hope it all turns out well for you and your LO
  • My DD and this LO both had higher heart rates. DD's was high (175) until about 12 weeks. This LO is consistently about 168-175 (home doppler) at 11w5d... Maybe it's another girl ;-)
