Starting them off early

I just got my almost 5 mo son a hat and  his first pair of sunglasses and he didn't say anything when I put them on him. It got me thinking... These babies are at an impressionable age, so what are you getting them used to early so they don't reject it later?

Obviously he needs the hat and glasses now because it's very sunny where I live, but I was also thinking of starting him getting used to a play pen.

What else?

Re: Starting them off early

  • Interesting topic. I like it and am curious what others will say.

My thing is shoes. We did this with my first and he knows he has to have socks and shoes to go out so he's never faught us. Obviously DD doesn't need shoes right now since she isn't walking but crib shoes are cheap enough and hopefully she won't fight shoes either.

  • Our lo has sunglasses but I'm interested to see what others say and get some good ideas.
  • Yep- alone time is a great one- I do that too and now in the mornings I can actually get some extra sleep because DS will play with his feet for a while

Yup I encourage Zachary to play alone, and I read to him in hopes he'll be into it when he's older.
I do plan on encouraging good eating habits from when he starts to eat, I don't believe he needs junk food until he's much older so I'll offer him loads of different fruits and veggies.
I say that because I heard about a girl through a friend of a friend and her twins are 18 months and they've never had fruit or veg they have chips and sweets and fizzy juice.

ETA: chips are fries here lol
  • We just got some baby banz sunglasses and hearing protection. We are taking him to a camp out music festival in June. It's something that DH and I love doing together and we want to share the enjoyment with DS so we are getting him experience early.
  • My main thing when she was younger was to get her used to being in the car seat. We are always on the go and I didn't want her to be screaming her head off every time we got in the car. This doesn't mean I left her in the car seat forever lol, we just tried to get out of the house a lot when she was younger and it worked. I'm getting her used to hats and sunglasses as well. So far so good!
  • We have been working to make her crib a place for sleeping ONLY.  She transitioned to it at 4 weeks (too big for the bassinet!) and since then we only put her in it when it is time to sleep.  She has a mobile (we call it "whale TV") but it only gets turned on at bedtime.  I'm hoping my husband can use this to help her transition to naps in the crib. Right now she naps where she falls- usually the carseat, RNP or Daddy's chest :)  So far it seems to work- she typically settles back to sleep after her nighttime wake-ups...

I'd love to try the shoes, but DH doesn't believe in crib shoes.

  • My DD hates her glasses :(, she plays by herself, plays with the dog. I dunno we kinda just go with the flow!
  • A few things that we are trying to get DS used to are:

    1. Socks and shoes, although his feet get SO hot in the car seat, that I don't put socks on him generally now that the weather is getting nicer. I did it more in the winter and now, it's sporadic.
    2. Hats, he still wears a light knit beanie on his head if we go out in the mornings and it's chilly.  I just bought him a baseball cap style hat and have yet to try it on him
    3. Being gentle with his hands, when he touches and/or rubs them up against something that he can pull and yank at. My hair being one of them, strings on my hoodies, and eventually the cat's tail.  :D

I have yet to find a pair of sunglasses that fit his face comfortably and that are not obnoxious. I will probably just resort to using the 3-4 hats that we bought him for Summer.  Hoping that he doesn't yank them off of his head.  I know so many people, mainly women with girls who have said; "She always let me put stuff in her hair/ on her head, but now she just rips them out/off."
  • Definitely time with the animals.  She actually will stroke the dogs, so I'm praising that a lot.  And just being out in general. We couldn't get childcare for today,  and DH and I had to attend a school field trip, so she came.  DH wasn't directly in charge of any kids,  so he just wore her and she did great. DD likes getting out and about.
  • Bows or hats for my DD!

  • Oh the playing alone is a good idea. Right now LO likes to be entertained! She'll play with her toys for a bit but then starts looking around to see where you are at. Our nanny is a little older and basically "spoils" her all day with one on one playtime...

one thing I do a lot, I guess, is to keep her curious. I let her smell just about everything I eat and drink, flowers, etc. I also let her touch random things and study them; Gatorade bottle, top of coffee container. Maybe I'll regret this later as she will want to get into everything...
  • Wiping LO's nose. He doesn't enjoy it, but when he's got boogies or crusties on his nose, he's gonna get a little wipe with a saline wipe. Hopefully it'll help him he used to it down the road.
