Heart murmur

So I took LO for her 2 week check up today. Dr. found a heart murmur. She assured me that it's very common and I shouldn't worry. Easier said than done.

We're being referred to a cardiologist. In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with this? I don't want to google it. Basically the only thing she told me to watch for was her turning blue :(

@thaisac1 you're a cardiologist right? Any reassurance you can give me?

This happened with us too. The pediatrician just said she heard some "swishing" in his heartbeat. And of course, we were like ????? and felt like it was something we needed to check out or we'd feel forever guilty. It was stressful dealing with a cardiologist visit (took forever, they had to lay him down and do whatever to look in his chest through their machine, painless but he cried the whole time). All for the cardiologist to say "Nope, looks good!" Sigh.

He's 3 now and this has never come up again as an issue. It's one of those things where in hindsight, it seemed pointless. But at the time, who knows until you get reassurance, you know? The doctor is right, it is quite common. Hopefully all is well with your LO!  :)

My LO has been diagnosed with a heart condition that started out as one thing but turned into something else (which is extremely rare). However, dealing with a pediatric cardiologist may be a pain but it will be well worth it to know your LO is ok!
  • Our Doctor did a follow up ultrasound at 11 days to check on a murmur and will again at six months. The murmur was small enough that he wasn't worried. He said they are super common then explained why. I forget details. Hope it is nothing.
  • We have been referred to a cardiologist for the same thing. Appt is in mid May. The hospital ped heard it at day 1, then our ped heard it at day 5, not at 2weeks, but heard it again at 4 weeks. Both peds said it sounded benign but it's worth following up to be safe.
  • We haven't had issues with either kiddo, but I have a family history of heart issues (I have both a murmur and an arrhythmia). The murmur is benign and pretty much just something to mention if I'm going to have a major medical event, just in case. It really can be no big deal - and I hope you get confirmation of that soon so you can relax with your LO. I totally understand not being able to until you're sure. Good job avoiding Dr. Google - he's terrifying.

  • DS1 (born at 33 weeks) was born with an ASD and a PDA. My H has a family history of heart issues, so I had fetal echoes while pregnant. We were referred to a cardiologist and he needed to be monitored for one year.

I also had a fetal echo with DS2. Nothing was detected. But when he was born, doctors heard a murmur. He had an echo in the hospital before we were released. They found an VSD, a whole between the bottom two chambers. Our ped heard it also on day 5 and week 2 follow ups appointments. We will have another echo and meeting with cardiologist in a few weeks. I am hoping we just need to monitor this.

OP, if the doctors were really concerned they would have had you get tests done right away or sent you to the hospital for monitoring.

  • My husband had one. Now it's just an irregular heartbeat. Like he has and extra beat everyone and then it's kind of funny to listen to, but has never caused him problems in everyday life.
  • My sister was born with something similar but it cleared up on its own very quickly.
