Babies on the Brain

May have food-poisoned DH and I.

My bad if I did, but I'm pretty sure that the smoked salmon I reheated for dinne that's been in our fridge for over 2 and 1/2 weeks was ok.

DH's cousin brought it from Michigan when she was visiting for Christmas. I checked every Google search result I found....and DH thought it was still probably ok to eat. It didn't taste bad, just smoked. I was going to call MIL before eating it (my gut tells me she would've said to eat it), but I know her restaurant is busy on Saturday nights.

So, I'm guessing we'll see in a few hours if I food-poisoned us or not. I think we're ok.

Seriously, how am I supposed to tell if a preserved/cured meat has gone bad? Did it smell fishy? Of course! Huh?

  • You ate meat that has been in your fridge for 2.5 weeks?  Ewww.

    Ick!

Edited to add: I have a thing with meat and freshness.  It either comes out of the freezer and is cooked within a day or is bought fresh and cooked within a day.

  • Oh that's tough one.  I think I would have probably thrown it. But I'm not sure...it was smoked.
  • I hope you don't get poisoned! But you should be ok.

  • Was it still packaged?  My DH is a chef and I'll ask him for you. Did you heat it?  I've always eaten smoked fish cold.

Great question! It was vacuum packed and yes, I reheated it in the pan as did my Asian in-laws when they were here for the holidays.

They also left me ANOTHER package of smoked salmon which is presently in the freezer.

I dunno really, I've never eaten smoked salmon before and just wanted to get rid of it and boy does DH hate wasting. :)

You'll  be fine, and the one in the freezer is fine too.  How do you prepare it hot and what do you serve it with?  I'm curious... and hungry Big Smile

  • it's smoked.. probably okay. It sits on supermarket shelves for a while.

  • I don't know the rules, but I know my parents have had smoked salmon in the fridge for a while. The best way I know how to tell if its bad is the color. If it still looked ok, you probably were safe.

Whew! Thanks for asking your DH. I just re-heated in the pan...DH said it definitely smelled fishy when he walked in the door. When my ILs were here, they just re-heated it and ate it warm, so I followed suit. My MIL can prepare leftovers like no one else, so I'm hoping to expand my horizons as in my Caucasian family, we umm throw leftovers out. Hehe.

I paired it with fresh green beans with fresh garlic, cheesy mashed potatoes and some red wine. I must admit, the smoked salmon is maybe a bit much for my liking, but overall it was fine.

Hope you find something in the fridge!
