Less baby movement?

I'm 31 weeks and baby vou just decided to slow down for the past 3 days. Went the ER yesterday because I had a strong headache and doctor made US and ECG and told me all was fine. I do count the movments and get to 10, but he was so active  and now so quiet. Anyone experienced this? Thank you!

Re: Less baby movement?

  • It's normal at this point. They don't have as much room and so they can't squirm around the way the my did before. As the my get bigger the last several weeks movements often become less frequent, although strong. If you're getting 10 movements in 2 hours you should try not to worry.

  • Thank you Amber  great to hear from someone with the same experience!  People keep asking if he moves a lot and when I say. .. not lately. .. just get the stories from moms with Always super active babies. For some reason it really leaves me worried...
  • My little bean will be so active one day and then quiet as a church mouse the next. Im just getting over a nasty bug and she obviously loved all the juice and fluid she was getting so she was overly active. Today shes been wuiet but still made it a point to step on my bladder at least once an hour. Pretty sure shes laughing in there everytime she does lol

  • I am 32 weeks and have seen the same trend as active in the morning, then quite until the next day.  I try to poke her to see if all is well, sometimes I get a response but I'm sure I'm ticking her off.....
  • They have busy days and lazy days.  And they do get less active as they start to run out of room.  I was told to count and make sure it's 10 kicks in 2 hours.  If you don't get that many, try having a cold drink and/or something sweet and lying down on your left side.  If that still doesn't get you more movement, then you call L&D.

  • My doctor tells me at every appointment now that its totally normal to not feel as much movement at the stage. He says that even if the baby has beenn a crazy monster in there now is about the time he will start slowing down. I'm almost 32 weeks if that helps any.
  • All of the above. Baby will have less room as he/she grows. Also they are starting to get into sleep/awake mode now, so you can have a long time with no movement.

If you get really worried, have an ice cold drink (water or oj) and lay on your side. baby should me moving after that. Also, don't be scared to go to the doctor! That's what they are there for :)

  • I woke up so paranoid about this last night :(

the movement has definitely changed from kicks to wiggles and rolls.

I downloaded a free kick counter and drank an oj at work and then counted and got the 10 kicks ... Which made me feel better!

i have a checkup up on Thursday but I think I'm going to call tomorrow to ask about it ... Even though I know the answer !

the app made it so easy to count.
  • I had the same convo with my dr around 30 weeks. She said they get a lot of panicked phone calls around that time, but it's perfectly normal for the movement to change because they're running out of room in there!
  • Of course they start to get phone calls, everything you read says "if movement changes at all, call your doctor immediately." It would help for some of those kick counting sites to talk more about how normal it is for movement to change throughout pregnancy especially in late third TRI, and for me I would want more info on how it changes and how an anterior placenta can affect feeling movement.
  • Thank you all for sharing <3 it is very helpful!
This morning I had an apointment with the hospital psychiatrist ( having a bad time sleeping ) and she told me I was "pregnancy obsessed" because I told her I had an App to count the kicks! What a sin. ..left her office knowing she has been pregnant many times and never ever did kick counting, so I am the crazy one. Just venting... B):p

You need a new psychiatrist.  Kick counting is universally recommended by OBs to help catch issues like the cord getting wrapped around baby's neck and other breathing/heart rate problems.  Kaiser gave me a little chart to fill out for kick counts.  Apps just make it easier.  Following your OB's directions is not "pregnancy obsessed".

  • I understand your concern (I'm totally paranoid myself!), but my dr said as long as I was getting the kick counts, even if her activity level changed, I shouldn't worry. As PP have already said, some of it is due to running out of room. I honestly think sometimes I get busy, or have just gotten so used to someone moving around in there that I don't notice them all the time. I had to go in for a non-stress test yesterday, and I wasn't noticing a lot of movement, but the sensor was picking up a TON, so that was reassuring.

    This!

There is a reason why you are asked to keep track of the kicks, and I wouldn't take that lightly at all or call yourself 'pregnancy obsessed '

Also I must be in the minority but my baby has never become 'less' active but the movements have  changed.  This is my 4th and I have always found them to keep their regular 'routine' but the movements change Bc they have less room to move around.
  • Thanks Marriedtoadutchman! At what point do you feel that change in movements? Around 30 weeks or later? Because I know this boy has big legs, but keeps changing his position... it was with his head down and 4 days ago was breech... so less room for kick mom but a lot to keep moving around?  :p
