Weight

Question for the STMs.  When you delivered your first baby how much weight did you lose within the first couple of weeks after delivery?  I'm asking b/c before my c section I was weighing in at 242 and now I weigh 218 and keep losing (not actively trying to lose).  My pre pregnancy weight was 233.  So I'm not sure if it is normal to lose over 20 pounds right from the get go or not.  I will ask my doctor, but was wondering if anyone else had experienced this or am I worrying for nothing?

Re: Weight

  • I was down 20 lbs from the time I weighed in at check in and the time I was released to go home two days later. If you think about it, you are losing the weight of the baby, the placenta, extra fluid and blood that was stored, etc.

    That makes sense.  Thanks.

  • Yeah, I lost about 20 pounds really quickly too.
  • I stopped weighing myself the last month or so of pregnancy and when I came home from the hospital I had lost 25 lbs from my last weigh-in (So likely more than that total).
  • Yes, I lost about that much in the first week or so; then, more weight came off more gradually after that.
  • The lbs dropped off surprising quickly. I gained 60+ with my daughter, and lost the first 30 pretty quickly in the weeks following the birth. I felt like I deflated from all the fluid retention from pregnancy/IV's in the hospital. It was pretty obvious what was definitely pregnancy related, and what was just bad choices throughout the pregnancy that packed on the lbs. I eventually plateaued and actually had to work to lose it (which I never did completely). I'm so curious this time what happens since I only gained a little less than 30 lbs total.

Though I did lose some at the hospital, it took at least a week or two before the fluid retention started going down!

  • If you BF the weight tends to come off quicker as well (don't know if you are but it could be a factor). I lost all my pregnancy weight and some more within 2 months with DD2 but some
of it came back after I stopped BF at 6 months.
  • Ahhh, this gives me hope!!!!

  • Loving the feedback! At my current weight gain, I'll probably be up right around 45 pounds by the time LO is born. It'd be amazing to be anywhere close to back on track after LO arrives.
  • There are a ton of factors that can affect weight gain and loss. I lost about 3 pounds during my last week pregnant and my total gain was about 15 pounds. I've lost about 25 pounds at 10 days post partum. This is my fourth and with all my kiddos I lost quickly while ebf, but gained weight quickly when I stopped  Ebf. I've been fighting a cold for the past 3 weeks so that could be affecting me too???
  • (Lurking from June) Every body is different. My mom didn't lose one pound after giving birth to my 8-pound sister. Weighed same amount walking in as out. Then I read some lady on here lost 26 pounds by the time she left the hospital (how is that possible??) I don't think there is "normal" when it comes to how fast weight comes off post-birth, or one can judge from others' experiences.

  • I'm also lurking from June and wanted to chime in that I lost 20 pounds by the time I got home from the hospital as well. I swear 10lbs was lost when my water broke it never stopped. Anyways I wouldn't worry as everyone is different.

  • I'm 6 days PP, I had a 6.7lb baby and am down 10lb.   However I am retaining a ton of water at the moment so I'm guessing I'm down more than that
  • I'm with @bebeonboard ... I had an almost 9# (8#14 oz) baby and lost less than 10 lbs by the time I left the hospital. I had a CS and they pump you full of IV fluid so the fluid retention was probably part of it. By 2 months PP I was about at the same weight but still had to wear maternity clothes or buy new bigger clothes because my hips were wider. DD was 15 months when I got my BFP and I never did get back to my original size even though I was back at prebaby weight.

    Everyone is different!

  • I gained 47 with my first. Lost 20 after the first two weeks, and the next 27 took a year. Interested to see how the weight loss process will be this time.

  • I try not to look at a scale at all for about 6 weeks because with my last 2 pregnancies I learned I retain a lot fluids over the first month or so and it depresses me.  Usually by 6 weeks I'm down by 25-30 pounds.

This is my goal. I have major goals by Feb of next year, but I think I'm going to weigh myself when I leave the hospital and then not weigh myself again until my 6 week clearance. That'll be my starting point. It may help my OCD.
