WWYD double stroller

DD will be 2 1/2 when kiddo #2 arrives. DD is pretty independent and really doesn't stay in a stroller for very long - but it definitely comes in handy for zoo and random long outings. I did wear her quite a bit when she was little and plan to with #2.

I just am not sure if I should fork out the $$$ for a double stroller if I don't see us using it that often except for random weekend outings that tire out DD enough that she stays in it. Still worth it? WWYD?

I think it depends on how often you use your stroller now. When my daughter was 2.5 I was doing a stroller fitness class and had her in it 2-4 times a week or more. Now, however, we're no longer doing that class and I probably can't justify the expense of a double.

However, when we do go to the zoo and other outings, she will probably want a ride sometimes so I'm considering one of these:

Im kind of bummed, actually, because I found one of these on a local mom swap for $40 and I sent it to my friend because she was pregnant and I wasn't. I became so shortly after and I should have snagged it!

SIL got a stroller where the second seat was either facing toward her (nephew, who was two, was going backward) OR it turned into a little platform that he stood on. It worked really well for them, and is probably what we'll do when it comes time for #2, assuming timing works out.

Does your current stroller have the option of a ride-on board? Could be a good middle ground.

For a 2.5 year old I don't know if fork out a ton of cash unless you're sure you'd use it. Another good middle ground might be looking into Craiglist/eBay/local Facebook yard sale pages and get a gently used one.

I'm in the same boat but my guy will be a new 3 when the baby comes. We just went to the zoo and he didn't want to go in the stroller but he did want to be held!

I think I'm going to see if I can find one second hand and keep my city mini GT. That way it's not forking over a ton of money for a new one. I might get the glider board and see how that goes. I just think the double will be nice for beach days!

I am clearly no help as I'm undecided too! But I do think second hand might be the way to go! I would also keep your single!

My second was born during the fall so I didn't buy a double stroller until spring when my oldest was almost 2. He is almost 3 now and we have used it so much and continue to do so. I got the Graco fast action fold and it was on the cheaper end as far as double strollers go.

My first 2 are 15 months apart so i didn't hesitate to buy a double stroller, thinking we would use it all the time. We bought the contours elite. It's much cheaper than the baby jogger select, but It has pretty much all the same features. It turns out by the time i was bringing both kids out by myself, my oldest was completely over sitting in a stroller and we rarely used it other than for trips that require a lot of walking, like the zoo. I am glad I got it though, because by the time this baby is here, my second will only be 15 months old so hopefully my 2 youngest will get a lot of use out of it. It's definitely nice to have a double, but if you don't think you will use it a lot, don't get a bulky expensive one. The contours elite is huge and such a pain to get in and out of the car. We actually use a wagon a lot when going to places outdoors so my 2 year old can hop in and out and the baby can be buckled in.

We're not really stroller people but for long excursions the double is really nice, even though DD just turned 4. We probably used it once a month, though less lately -- zoo, walking around Seattle, going for a longer walk from home. But...the only place I really couldn't live without it is the zoo and they rent strollers there.

Also I preferred single stroller plus ergo for DS's first year (DD was 2.3). Everyone happy? Baby in the stroller, DD on foot. Big or little sad/tired? Baby in ergo, DD in stroller if she wanted.

@fullhandsfullheart - would you recommend the contours elite if it was going to get a lot of use? I'd planned on just getting an umbrella stroller and a good carrier until I found out we were having twins, so now I'm trying to find a reasonable priced double that maneuvers decently.

I've been looking into this issue myself as DS will be 2.5 when LO gets here and I think I've decided I want the sit and stand ultra. It looks so versatile that I think it will work!

My oldest was 23 months, when my second was born. We purchased a Phil & Ted's dot. I love it. The second seat is removable, so when I don't have two kids I don't have to switch strollers. I really like it for zoo, long walks, mall, science center & museums. My oldest, now 4 will still sit in it on occasion for long walks or if his Asthma is bothering him. These strollers have good resell value and I've never seen one last for more than a few hours on a fsot page or Craigslist. I also appreciate that it's compact and easy to navigate in our town's shops that don't always have modern door ways. I also like having a double, because if your 2/3 year old is tantrumy/not listening you can buckle them in. I wore my third a lot, and honestly a hill & heat while pushing a stroller can be uncomfortable, or one too many laps at the mall.

Now that we're on baby #4 I'm debating the double umbrella, I don't like how wide they are, but might be nice on occasion.

I would recommend it if you plan to use it a lot. There are a bunch of different ways to turn the seats and it has an adapter so you can put an infant car seat (or 2, you just have to buy a second adapter) in it which is nice. The first few times we used it I had the newborn in the car seat and my son facing forward. Now they both sit in the regular seats and I either face them both out or they like to face each other. My only complaint is that it is really heavy and takes me a long time to get out of the car and set the seats up how I want them. I compared it to the baby jogger city select and it was pretty much the same stroller for a fraction of the cost. They have them at buy buy baby if you want to take if for a test ride before you decide. With twins, I'm sure a double stroller would be used often so I would definitely look into it!

My DS will be 3 by the time this baby is born and he's so tall that he's already barely fitting in our stroller now, so we're definitely skipping the double stroller...we do have 3 strollers all together now (Britax B-Ready, City Mini and an umbrella stroller) so I think for something like the zoo we can just each take a single stroller and if my older DS wants to sit for a while he can. I do want to invest in a wagon for next summer when the baby will be sitting up already, I think DS will be much more willing to go in that than a double stroller...we can pull both kids and have room for all our crap too

My oldest was 2.5 when my youngest was born. They are now 4 and almost 2. We were very fortunate in that we got our double stroller (CitiMini GT side-by-side) as a gift. But we absolutely adore it. We tried both the side by side and the City Select and much preferred the side by side. It folded flatter, fit in the trunk better, and was considerable easier to push and steer. We also liked how both kids face out instead of looking back or at the back of the other kid.

We use it quite a bit. For walking to preschool, for trips to the zoo (it carries all our nonsense even when the girls walk a lot), for naps out (my oldest never naps at home, but if she's in something that moves at naptime she conks), and for family walks in the evening(we get them in their pjs and walk the neighborhood). We still have the single stroller for when we need it, but we use the double way more often. We were just out yesterday talking about how sad it's going to be that we can't fit the 3rd kid in there!

DS is almost 6. After much research we've decided on the Joovy Caboose for the same reasons. We live in Florida and wanted a sit/stand for Disney and the other parks.

I can't stand using the stroller at disney! I hate having to track it down after every ride. So we use our tula. Not sure what we'll do when LO is too big for the toddler. Lol

Ours will be about 3 years apart. I'm not getting a double, I plan to wear the baby when needed. But, we have a wagon for when the baby is bigger, and my mom has a side by side double that I can use whenever. At 2.5, my daughter still really likes to ride in her stroller, but she is in-and-out a lot. So if you don't baby wear, I would get a double. Also we have 2 strollers so we could each use one with a kid for festivals/zoo.

Been doing the Parks thing for a while so we keep pretty good track of it and know when to leave it for a few rides in a row.

Plus Disney lets you bring food and baby wearing and food wearing is a lot. So the stroller buckets are helpful.

Thanks for this post! I've been thinking a little bit about double strollers and this has been very helpful. Ours will be 21 months apart. Right now, our lo still enjoys his stroller but who knows in 9 months or a year?? We will see a lot to think about!

We decided to go with the City Select for this exact reason. DD1 will be 3.5 and we don't utilize the stroller a ton, but do use it at Disney, long walks, zoo, etc. So we can have it be a double when we want, and be a single when we want. Can also throw a running board on it. They hold value very well so we went for it.

I'm going to wear the new lo and let ds use the stroller. He will be 2.5. I'll baby wear for awhile so I don't think the double will be necessary.

Mine will be 2.5 apart too. I'm a babywearing fan, but I think I'll get a double because we like to walk to Starbucks and stuff like that with our neighbors etc.

I don't see her wanting to sit under/behind someone, so I'll probably bite the bullet and go for a side by side. I have a b-ready, and the second seat, but I really don' think she's goign to want to see nothing.

I personally think it would be worth it. Sorta coincidentally for what you already mentioned. Like zoos, and fairs and things of that sort. At 2 1/2 no way lil bit will wanna walk too long and when you got stuff to do and you realize she isn't gonna walk anymore man having that stroller will so be worth it.

My son will be 4 1/2 when baby is born and I'll be getting a double sit and stand at least for the same reason. I was looking on Amazon just yesterday and I saw some pretty reasonable prices on doubles. Like this one:

That one is crazy cheap. Although possibly not well suited for an infant. This is the one I was looking at. At 142 I think it's pretty reasonable.

Alternately I personally don't have a problem with second hand things and between craigslist , garage sales or 3 Bags Full you can find REALLY nice high end doubles for dirt cheap ... like $20.00 or something. And at a price like that unless you have issues with second hand it's a great way to go.

Wow just now seeing this. We live 40 min from the parks and have passes. One of us wears a back pack for food/drinks/diapers the other wears the tot. Just our preference

ok i started reading this and got more into the idea of a double stroller (DD will be 2 1/2 when baby is born) i love our BOB Motion stroller and thought i could get away with one of those ride along standing boards but the more i think about it DD will probably want to sit with the new baby. Now im looking at Buy buy baby and Baby R Us and well.... now i really want a drink

I love all the advice on here... its super helpful even when i feel overwhelmed!

My son was 18 months when my daughter was born. We go the Phil and Ted with the double seat that was removable. LOVED it so much because you could use it as a single or a double and it was SO easy to push even with two in it, that when I saw one at a second hand store I bought it for my sister. Her son will be 2 when the baby is born and when I go back to work she will be watching baby.
