Cracking Bones

Hey guys -

So an interesting sound came out of my uterus this week - the sound of cracking bones. Like, if you crack your knuckles, that sound. At first I was like "Oh no, I am not getting off the couch, what if this is that popping sound everyone says they hear before their water breaks? I am so not ready yet!" but, no liquid (or no extra liquid, anyway) so at  my weekly, I asked the doctor what it could have been - she thinks it was just the baby rolling her ankle, and popping her joint - the amniotic fluid apparently acts as an amplifier of sound. Way cool - a little weird, but way cool. It happened again a few minutes ago, and I just wanted to check in and see if anyone else experiences/experienced this?

Re: Cracking Bones

  • I have heard this several times now. The first time really freaked me out. Last night when little one was moving strongly it sounded like a snapped tree branch! I was glad when my husband finally heard it because when I first mentioned it to him I'm not sure he believed me.

  • Slightly OT but still related--some researchers recently set out to figure out exactly what makes that sound. It's an air bubble forming/expanding in the joint! I remember this story when it came out last year as my hips crack constantly. I always thought if it was an air bubble, it was from the air bubble popping. But apparently that is not the case!

Ditto. My SO was like "Are you sure that's what you heard? I mean, you're making all sorts of weird noises now, are you sure it wasn't indigestion?" ... (insert annoyed look by me here).  Felt totally vindicated when the doctor told me I was likely right :)

I heard about that but hadn't read up on it - thanks! :)

  • I've been hearing this too but never heard it with DD1. I wasn't sure what it was for awhile until I consulted Dr. Google. Apparently it's fairly common, but still weird!
  • I asked my midwife about it because I've heard/felt the same thing. I actually didn't know this, but there's a joint that connects your pelvic bone together right in front and that can sometimes pop/crack.
