I need an anatomy lesson

Don't laugh...I grew up in NC and they wouldn't even teach us about human reproduction in biology class because abstinence only education was all the rage. So. I know it's the vulva that we generally refer to as the vagina. But then...what's a vagina? Is the whole thing a vulva or is that a specific part? And baby descends down the birth canal then out the...vulva?

I'm ok with fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus, but we seriously didn't learn about female sex organs and I didn't take bio in college.

Re: I need an anatomy lesson

  • I was going to post an image, but the bump gods may not like that. You can google image "vagina anatomy" for nice, medical pictures (the first page at least isn't actual V's, but diagrams).

The baby comes out of the vaginal opening. The "lips" are the outer labia, and the littler lips are the inner labia. Your pee comes out of the urethral opening, which is a small hole kind of hidden under the clitoris/clitoris hood.

  • I feel you girl. I'm lucky I got away with high school health class. My Mom was a medical assistant and worked in a Doctor's office/ER for 10 years and I STILL got my mouth washed out with Dial soap for saying, "penis" once.

Let's not repeat our parent's mistakes.
  • @HomeyDontPlayThat, my mom sat me down in front of PBS at age 12 (long after I had learned about sex from friends, oy), then made my dad ask me if I had any questions after to completely avoid "that talk". When she was helping me with DS, I could see her cringe when I mentioned cleaning his penis (in the context of a diaper change, nothing that should be awkward). I love her and we're really close but I have never discussed boys, or even parts of my birth experience with the kids and certain health problems with her due to her severe discomfort. Yup, I'm on the do better plan here too.
  • Thank you for asking this! I was actually wondering what in the hell a vulva was, but didn't want to look stupid. I honestly thought that the vulva was "the little man in the boat" part. Vaginas (vulvas?) are so confusing.

  • @Little+Tiny  the little man in the boat is the clitoris. Like another PP said, I probably shouldn't post a pic here, but this website gets pretty detailed about the anatomy down there: https://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/health-info/self-exam-vulva-vagina/

  • I'm sad this thread exists but am glad people are willing to ask/answer questions! I also hate when people say vagina like it's the equivalent of a penis, actually it's not that would be more the clitoris but somehow that's dirtier to say

  • I don't see why it would be a problem to post an anatomical picture of a vulva when it isn't being made sexual. Especially if it's being used for educational purposes. If I knew much about it I would post a picture for clarification, but honestly I didn't know even where the clitoris was up until now.
That may sound hard to believe since it's "that part that feels so good", but having a sexual dysfunction disorder makes everything feel terrible down there. I was kinda starting to think the clitoris was a myth after all -_-

  • I hate the term 'man in the boat'. Why does female genitalia need a reference to a man? And, it doesn't look anything like a man in a boat!

You can think of it as a woman in a boat if it bothers you so much?

  • @Little+Tiny
I've actually never considered that lol. I've always thought of it more of the cherry on top ;)
  • I had never heard the "man in the boat" reference until this thread and I'm really not sure how it looks anything like a man in a bit anyways. That just sounds weird.
  • There's probably a really nice chart in your OB's office also, so the next time you're in there, waiting for the doc to come in, take a look!

  • @MrsDho11, I've only ever seen midwives :). With my first two the office had tons of pics of babies and some birth/motherhood comics on the wall. This time I'm going to a birth center where it's decorated to look homey.
