Diaper rash

DD has had diarrhea past 3 days - thankfully it ended yesterday. She's otherwise her happy self except she's so irritated and red from wiping so often. We brought her to the pediatrician because we thought it was diaper rash but she told us it wasn't a fungal infection it was just irritation. I was using Balmax diaper ointment but she told me to use Drsitin maximum so we switched. We've let her air dry all night without a diaper the past 2 days and it's definitely better but it seems like when the diaper goes on during the day it got worse again yesterday. For those of you who have dealt with this before, what are you doing? How can I prevent it? I feel so bad because she cries so hard with wiping and I can tell it's so painful. It looks painful like raw irritated skin. Her hiney is so red - thankfully much better but I'm afraid while its looked the best it has in days it will get worse and keep cycling without fully healing.  Any advice is much appreciated!

Re: Diaper rash

  • As much air as possible-like you're doing-is the best remedy. Instead of wipes, rinse her bum with water (like by wringing out a facecloth over her), then gently pat dry with a dry cloth, and let air dry or blow on it, making sure it's totally dry before the cream goes on. I find wipes can be irritating and make rashes worse.

  • We use the Honest Co Healing Balm. DD never had a rash as bad as you're describing but it would always clear up within 48 hours when we use the healing balm. We also have the Honest Soothing Butt Wash, which is kind of a soap in a spray bottle, I think it has witch hazel and such in it. We haven't had to use it yet but it's perfect for your situation. You just spray and wipe.

Try putting Aquafor over the diaper cream during the day. It will help it from rubbing off onto the diaper. Works wonders for us!
  • My son has very sensitive skin in general so I've always used pampers sensitive diapers on him. Maybe try those until she's all healed.
  • I swear by "water wipes" from target - they are wipes made with 99.99% water and .01% fruit extract - SO gentle on their bottoms. Once we switched to these we haven't had a single diaper rash. Also, back when she had really irritated skin I broke down and put some hydrocortisone cream on her bottom and BOOM the rash was completely (and I mean COMPLETELY) gone by morning. But I've heard people say not to use hydrocortisone cream for diaper rash?? I'm not sure of the reason but for is it was the only thing to finally cure it.
  • My son has been the same way for 3 days. It's horrible. Yesterday I couldn't keep up with the diarrhea and laundry and changing. Ugh! Anyway, I wash everytime he poops, and I wash with old school soap- IVORY! lol. I use it on all 3 of my kids butts when I wash them. Then a&d or aquaphor. As much diarrhea as he's had, he hasn't had any redness on his butt.
  • I realize this is a bit late but I definitely agree with PP to stop using wipes.  DS used to get awful rashes due to food intolerances.  No wipes, diaper free time, maximum strength butt paste and baking soda in the tub.  The baking soda really helps soothe before bed so you can load up on the cream.  Doing this usually helps it clear up within 48 hours.  Within 3 days you couldn't even tell anymore.
  • Waterwipes are amazing! Perhaps hold off solids for the next few days to avoid anything that might be difficult for her to pass!
  • Were going through this right now and it might not work for everyone but instead of wiping at all I run her little tooshie under the bath tap and wash it straight off. Gently towel dry and then use Desitin (which ps. Is only new here in Australia and it trumps all the others lol) and then nappy on! I saw I significant improve over a four hour period!
