Re-using crib mattress

I was planning on using DD's mattress for this little guy but have recently read a couple of articles saying that reusing old crib mattresses can increase the risk of SIDS. I haven't been able to find any legit, scientific articles about it. DD slept on her mattress maybe 5 times and it is only 2 years old. I hate to buy a new one if we really don't need it but for piece of mind it may be worth it? What are your thoughts?

Re: Re-using crib mattress

  • We have reused ours.  Maybe its not as safe if it was jumped on and no longer as firm?  I consider mine safer than a new one because it has totally been off-gassed now that its 3 year old!

  • DS has used his mattress handed down from my cousin.  We will be buying a new one this time, but only because he still needs it for his convertible crib to toddler bed and we will have a new crib for this baby (also convertible).

If your mattress has only been used 5 times, I'd consider that new. We'll probably get a new one for baby girl because DS has been in it every night since he came home from the hospital. He's 2 now. He's also jumped on it a ton and it's pretty shot.

  • I think re-using a mattress from your older child is fine. I don't plan to for a couple of reasons:
    1. We will move our then 3 yr old to a toddler bed so he might as well take his with him.

    2. Babies need firm matresses for skeletal development in the first year and although ours is super firm (lullaby earth) and has an infant side and toddler side, it is noticeably sunken in in the middle from the over 30 lb weight from our 2.5 yr old.

    - the new baby deserves a brand new firm mattress like our first got and it works out for us to buy a second crib mattress.

  • I take that note as, don't buy a crib mattress second hand.  my son is almost 2 and has slept in his crib every night and I'm not concerned at all about using it with baby number
  • DD has pretty much slept on her crib mattress since she was about 10 weeks old, and I plan to use it for this baby, as well.  She's been using the toddler since since she as about a year and she's 22 mos now, so unless we flip it back over and find there's something wrong with it or it totally lost it firmness, then we'll get a new one.

This seems to be what you were talking about! The answer seems to be if it was your own crib mattress - maybe. It's more a mold thing and a firmness thing, so if the kiddo who used it first had a lot of accidents, or the mattress is squishy, it may not be a great idea.

That being said, we're using a used one from my cousin. Its a much better mattress than we could afford (a special SIDS mattress), and it doesn't have a core to get moldy, so I figure it's safer than buying a new cheaper one, which may not have as many safety features.
