I was planning on using DD's mattress for this little guy but have recently read a couple of articles saying that reusing old crib mattresses can increase the risk of SIDS. I haven't been able to find any legit, scientific articles about it. DD slept on her mattress maybe 5 times and it is only 2 years old. I hate to buy a new one if we really don't need it but for piece of mind it may be worth it? What are your thoughts?
Re: Re-using crib mattress
1. We will move our then 3 yr old to a toddler bed so he might as well take his with him.
2. Babies need firm matresses for skeletal development in the first year and although ours is super firm (lullaby earth) and has an infant side and toddler side, it is noticeably sunken in in the middle from the over 30 lb weight from our 2.5 yr old.
- the new baby deserves a brand new firm mattress like our first got and it works out for us to buy a second crib mattress.
Our little lightbulb is on the way!

This seems to be what you were talking about! The answer seems to be if it was your own crib mattress - maybe. It's more a mold thing and a firmness thing, so if the kiddo who used it first had a lot of accidents, or the mattress is squishy, it may not be a great idea.
That being said, we're using a used one from my cousin. Its a much better mattress than we could afford (a special SIDS mattress), and it doesn't have a core to get moldy, so I figure it's safer than buying a new cheaper one, which may not have as many safety features.
