FFFC -- 4/22 edition

How has no one started this thread yet? Perhaps everyone is still recovering from yesterday's UO. :)

My FFFC is that I am taking the day off work (kinda--doing a test run for when I actually have the baby with my work back-up and letting her run things today) and planning on doing NOTHING productive. I have a mountain of laundry to do and thank you notes from the shower to write, but I am going to wait until this weekend when DH can help. DS is at day care, and I attended an 8 am meet-and-greet with the pediatrician office we are considering, so I think I have done my duty for today. I need to savor some of these last days when I do get to be home by myself since I'll be a work-from-home/SAHM hybrid (if that exists or is even possible...) in a few weeks.

Yup! I do this all the time- I just get dressed at the dryer ;)

  • I did three loads of laundry on Wednesday. The last load is still sitting in the dryer.

It was mostly the kids clothes and they haven't needed any of it, so I haven't lugged it up the two flights of stairs from the basement. At least it's clean, right?
My girls have been getting dressed out of a clothes basket in my bedroom all week.  I keep dumping the clothes on my bed to search through for socks and that certain shirt they just *have* to have and then at night when I go to bed, just piling it all back in the basket for another day.
And I really need to do another load for them, their hamper is starting to overflow. (just goes to show they have too many clothes!)

  • I don't want to adult today. I have pink eye (seriously what adult gets this!) that I caught from DS2, and I thought I was being so careful!

To piggy back on the laundry thing, I left a load in the dryer for a few days. Today I went to fold it and it smelled! Apparently DH had changed the settings to refresh some clothes and I didn't notice. Now the clothes are getting washed again in vinegar.

Also, I'm unreasonably upset at the nurse yesterday who made a big deal about my gaining almost 4 lbs since my last appointment, and saying I shouldn't have gained so much already.

I've gained about 26 lbs at 32+2 weeks. With both my others I started out slightly underweight, gained about 35, and lost it all within a few months after birth.  I don't see why my body wouldn't be the same this time around.

Anyway, after her lecture on "be careful" and "eat healthy" I'm both pissed and paranoid. I made cookies for the family yesterday and couldn't even let myself eat one.

  • @AmberLiz99 That always burns me up too. I have only gained around 22-24 lbs and have a complication where one of the symptoms is rapid and excessive weight gain. Trust me, I am WAY more worried about my weight than any doctor or nurse and the best thing for me is for them to NOT SAY A WORD especially if they haven't even asked about my eating habits and told me explicitly not to continue my workouts or even walk for exercise at this point. Last pregnancy I was up 40+ lbs by this point. I think that I am being far more diligent in keeping tabs on it than they ever could, so they just need to STAHP.

I will say it was a lot easier with one than it is with two (soon to be three) kids. If you're a self motivated person and set realistic expectations and goals for yourself it should be fine. Hard but definitely manageable (depending somewhat on your type of job)

I attempted this and failed. Even with a nanny a few days a week, I was overwhelmed by working at home, taking care of the baby, and cleaning the house!! It was not a walk in the park. I ultimately gave up the job for the kid.

I appreciate hearing this side of things. I want to be realistic. And this is my second--I can't forget that my first will still be around and need just as much attention (if not more) than ever as well. I work for myself and have one large contract right now that takes up most of my time. So we'll see if I can keep everything rolling... I know I wouldn't have been able to do it with my first with all the shock, issues and complications that came along with his birth and the changes afterwards.

  • @alileecam My husband works at home, and for probably the first four or five months, it was more or less workable for him to have the baby at home. We are really fortunate that we have parents in town with flexible schedules who could help out when he had meetings or deadlines, and it definitely slowed down his days, but it was pretty OK. Once she started being awake more, rolling around, etc., we did have to nail down a better childcare situation.

One thing that I think would have helped my husband be more productive is baby-wearing. I finally sat him down and convinced him that putting her in the Ergo would help him get more done, and he did find that made things easier, but for some reason he either was reluctant to do it all the time or wasn't confident in using the carrier... I don't know, he's weird about some things. It totally would have made his life easier if he'd embraced it, because he had to admit that when he wore her, he was much better able to multitask.

  • @AmberLiz99 @alileecam I had to do the 3 hour glucose test, managed to pass is (which I was thrilled about) and then my doctor asked me to still cut carbs and sugar because I'm borderline. The scale said I had gained 7 lbs in a month, but I think they weighed me with boots and a particularly heavy sweater. Another 2 weeks later and I weighed in the same as I had 1.5 months prior. I'm still cautious to watch my carb and sugar intake but since they said that (after telling me my weight gain looked good at every appt before that) now bread and ice cream are all I ever crave.

My fffc, I'm thinking of starting my maternity leave early so that I can be available at home for a few weeks to sell our house. Not the kind of relaxing maternity leave I had originally planned...

The thing is that my glucose test was totally normal, not even boarder line, I didn't gain any weight until I to the second trimester, my OB isn't concerned, and I've gained about the same as with my other pregnancies. It was just this one nurse who made a big deal about it, and now I feel like all I can eat are salads, fruit,  and skim milk. I may be totally overreacting

Sister, you deserve it. Your SIL drama plus your hubby thinking about joining the military allows for some sweet freaking ice cream to make an appearance. To hell with that nurse, whose snide comments have been given way too much power until now. She isn't thinking about you anymore, so drown out your thoughts with heavenly goodness. Please, if not for yourself, then for GD Mommas everywhere! ;)

I totally craved automotive smells at this point in my last pregnancy! No joke, I snuck down to the garage one night to smell my snow tires. My OB thought I was nuts. I think I read somewhere that craving strange/chemical smells during pregnancy can signal a magnesium deficiency? Or yeah, it's just weird pregnancy behavior.

  • Craving for nonnutritional things is called Pica and does happen in pregnancy and usually is a sign of a nutrient deficiency. Heightened smells from pregnancy open us up to a whole palate of things we probably wouldn't normally smell or be attracted to.
  • I get so agitated with my ob's every time I go to see them, they question me about what I am eating. I have gained a total of 6 pounds so far at 32 weeks, I have an appt tomorrow so it could be more by now. I hate being treated like I am purposely trying to have an unhealthy pregnancy. I have just been having a rough one. I'm so ready to be done with them!

You aren't going to want to be home when people look at your house if that's what you are meaning.  They say to just keep your house 1 hour from clean (I know easier said than done).  But I wouldn't give up the maternity leave just for that if I could--I would want to save as much time as I could for after baby came.

I'm still researching all this, but I think in CA I'm eligible for up to 1 month disability and then the 12 weeks after baby. I'm also not going back to my job here after because we're moving cross country for DH's work. It's all very complicated, but if it doesn't affect my maternity leave after, that's my plan.

Sounds like they are doing their job.
I agree. Unless you were severely overweight pre pregnancy, 6 pounds in 32 weeks isn't really..... Healthy? They have every right to be concerned, and it's also standard procedure to ask about your caloric intake and where your nutrients are coming from. My dr asks every appointment. It's common. She's not prying into my personal life, just making sure I'm giving my baby the best possible start to life.

I have also gained 6 pounds (31w). I had gained about 13, but then they started me on a GD diet. I was overweight to start with (208, now weighing in at 214, I had gotten up to 221 before GD), so my doctor isn't wildly concerned, although she did express some trepidation last visit when I had dropped 4 pounds in two weeks. If you're really concerned that they are overreacting, keep a food journal and show it to them next time you're at an appointment. I'm definitely eating three meals a day and two snacks - and I'm eating lots of leafy greens and lean protien. My body just doesn't store it the same way it packs on carbs.

Plus, baby is weighing in at the 46th percentile, so he is average and growing. As long as baby is fine, growing at a normal rate and you're getting the nutrition you need, all should be well.

Just like some people gain more in pregnancy some people gain less. I don't think you can say it's not healthy when you don't know this person's body.

I haven't talked much about it here, but I've only gained6-8 pounds, currently 31 weeks. I'm pretty average size, but I probably could have standed to lose 10 pounds or so before getting pregnant and still been healthy. My pre pregnancy weight also fluctuated 10 pounds or so and my 8 week appointment was on the higher end. I also don't weigh my self all the time so basically from my 8 week appointment to my 12 week I lost 4 pounds and then gained 8 up to now. I don't think you have to be severely overweight to only gain a little.

My baby is growing fine and also in the 40ish percentile. Which is what matters.

My doctor asks if I've been eating normally which I have and hasn't been overly concerned.  I agree that doctors hopefully have your best interests at heart and are asking questions to help you.

I'm sorry, that sounds frustrating, but they are probably just looking out for you and baby.  Have they told you what their concern is and how much they would like you to gain? I started out in the normal BMI range and have gained about 23 pounds so far.  At my last appointment, my doctor was concerned that I didn't gain enough since my previous appointment.
