Re: All Day Nausea

  • Welcome to first trimester. Ask your dr for anti nausea meds. Get some pedialite or an electrolyte drink, crackers and Preggy Pops.

  • I was horribly nauseated my 1st trimester - never threw up from it but was MISERABLE. Got Zofran from my OB, and it helped tremendously, but now I'm seeing scary lawsuit commercials about birth defects associated with it. Fortunately, my daughter was born healthy. I would stick to the popsicles, saltines, gatorade and gingerale unless it gets too unbearable. The good news is, it usually goes away by the 2nd trimester. Best of luck!

  • My doctor prescribed diclegis and it's been a lifesaver for me. I've also found Gatorade to help.
  • This was me too!  I'm almost 12 weeks and haven't vomited once, but I was nauseated and gagging all the time.  I started taking Unisom and B6, and it helped a ton!  I still have waves of nausea here or there, but it is much better and I can actually eat like a normal human being.  I still gag at nothing, though.

  • Thanks ladies! I have been having pretzel goldfish rather than saltines and Sprite, but they really haven't helped. I don't like ginger ale or Gatorade even on a normal day. I have found that my body tends to be least nauseous on a burger and tater tots or fries, which until this past week I hadn't eaten in literally years. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Diclegis saved me.  As for the burger, yes, McDonald's was really the only "meal" I ate for the first 13 weeks.  Not sure why that stayed down but not normal stuff like soup or toast.

  • Whenever I tell people that nauseated but haven't actually vomited they seem to think I've dodged a bullet. It's definitely an all day thing for me too. The main thing that has been working for me is making sure I have just the right amount of food in my stomach. If I get too hungry or too full I feel sick. I'm also repulsed by everything. It's really hard to find something I'm willing to eat. I have to be careful about what I'm eating, though, because I've also been struggling with constipation.
  • Welcome to the fun of pregnancy.  I barely ate a thing from 9-11 weeks because my nausea was so bad and anything that I did get down came back up.  Vit b6 and unisom were a miracle for me (the ingredients in diclegis).  I also started sipping cold boost/ensure during the day.  Small sips forced down here and there stayed down and then I was at least getting SOMETHING with protein into my body.
  • Vitamin B6 helped me a ton, too. And, for some reason, all of my typical foods made me sick but a McChicken from McDonalds stayed down and somehow made me feel better.

This is way late, but thank you so much for sharing that about Zofran, @mamakat13. I was about to make an appointment with my GP to get some Zofran since I'm going to be traveling abroad for weeks 6-9 of my first trimester but after seeing what you wrote, googled around and found a bunch of stuff where the FDA has advised against it. Scary! Looks like Diclegis might be the safe alternative though!
  • I'm so glad that I didn't take the Zofran last pregnancy even though I was sooooo nauseated!  Drink lots of water, don't get too hot and eat small meals.

I threw up at the doc's initial appt. But he said that it was a good thing because the hormones that make you nauseous are the same ones that your body needs to change in order to carry your baby.
  • I suffered terribly with all day nausea and vomiting. I ended up on diclegis, reglan and eventually zofran. But until we started trying medication I was sipping on soda all day because it was calories, liquid and the carbonation helped. Also, I found that if I was craving something I could keep that down when nothing else would.
  • I'm in my sixth week and experiencing nausea throughout most of the day. I have a set of "seabands" which seem to be helping. I bought them in the past for seasickness on cruises. They are stretchy wristbands that ease nausea by compressing accupressure points in your wrists. Give 'em a try...they're only a couple bucks at the pharmacy.
  • @bbkidz To quote my doctor: "Get through these weeks however you need to. Eat what makes you feel better. Worry about eating healthy when the nausea clears."

Being nauseated all day is normal. Eat throughout and try seabands.

I'm currently 7w3d and I have had all day-every day nausea since the day I turned 6 weeks. Its been hell and most days all I can eat are saltines and popsicles.

Before becoming pregnant my husband and I were vegan. Now I sometimes crave meat or cheese but when I go to eat them its gag-city for me. I have had some things that have had a bit of diary or such because it seems like the only thing I can stomach, mainly egg noodles.

I just had my dating U/S today and the nurse suggested unisom and B6 (25 mg-3x a day: up to 200 mg/ day) I'm hoping it works because this whole not eating thing is making me so exhausted. I sleep 12+ hours and I'm still so tired all of the time.

I'm in the same boat especially mornings and evenings. So nauseas not much vomitting. Eating saltines and soup mostly
  • This my third pregnancy, and I've had the all day nausea each time (no vomiting, just a sick, queasy feeling).
    Here's what has helped me:

    - Take vitamins at night, before bed, with a cracker or two. Sometimes the vitamins themselves can cause that upset stomach feeling, especially if you are taking vitamins with a lot of iron or DHA.

    - If you gag while taking your vitamins, try taking them with a sip of a strong flavored juice, like cran-blueberry.

    - Keep fruit in the freezer. If nothing sounds good, some frozen fruit in the blender is still usually ok for me.

    - For protein, try peanut butter instead of meat.

    - Sip on decaf coffee or decaf tea when the nausea starts to get bad. Somehow, warm liquids help settle it down.

    - When nothing sounds good to eat, think of the most simple comfort foods that kids eat (plain pasta, plain cheeseburger, toast with an egg, macaroni and cheese, broth and rice, etc.). Sometimes when nothing sounds good, a basic kid food is all I can stomach. I lost 13 lbs in first tri last time due to the nausea.
  • Try limes! I have been really sick especially the last few weeks. A friend of mine who recently had baby told me that limes seemed to help immensely. She said she had cut up limes in her purse at all times, and when she felt nausea she would suck on one of those and it would go away. I tried it this morning, and it seems to work!

  • My friend is a pharmacist and is 16 weeks. Her dr gave an RX for nausea. She did the research and found it was unisom. The active ingredient is doxylamine, make sure that you get the one with this listed, there's a few with a different active ingredient  She said take it before bed and she was great the next day. Ask your dr but I'm starting tonight. Besides that crackers periodically and ginger drops or ginger ale have helped some.
  • I have HG so I deal with a nausea clinic, these are some of the tips that help me..but might not help every one and food (sweet, sour, preggo pops, ginger, crackers ect) doesn't help me at all. I have also tried acupuncture, seabands, nutritionists, dieticians, ect

I take meds of course but on top of them I take B6, antacid and probiotics and magnesium. I do not take a prenatal at all during my pregnancies as they make me sick. I sometimes can take a childrens iron free sugar free gummy with folic acid.

Eating protein every 2 hours. (small small amounts)

    Getting lots of sleep.

Carrying Ziploc freezer bags, they are the best to contain on the go vomit.

I take Zofran and diclectin and took reglan first trimester. I sometimes have to get IV fluids/meds. Hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm 9 and 1/2 weeks and the nausea is so bad but no vomiting. Can barely eat crackers and soup on most days but every now and then I can handle Mac and cheese and McDonald's fries. As for fluids, water has been really hard to drink and I can tell I'm getting dehydrated. Ginger ale and Gatorade, I don't even like those when I'm normal. Hope you find something that helps you! Good luck

I was having the same problem until I started sniffing some Doterra lavender essential oil a friend gave me when something smelled bad to me. Suddenly, I noticed it would settle my stomach. I started putting it on my pillow or just sniffing the roller ball straight and it seems to be the best thing I've tried. I am a little nervous about applying it topically even though it's therapeutic grade only because I've heard of lavender helping with bringing menstrual cycles, which makes me feel weird.

  • Ginger chews and preggo pops from gnc are getting me through the day. I take 50 mg unisom with a b6 at night in combination with these and I'm finally seeing the light of day.
  • I have a lot of nausea as well and I discovered "Anchor" bars-- they are protein bars with ginger, b6, etc. I keep one by my bed and eat it before I get out of bed and drink crystal light lemonade which I make at night and keep on ice next to my bed in a yeti cup. The bars are used for nausea before getting on boats, flying, etc. I think this has really helped me and makes me feel good I am getting in a good amount of protein (20g). Also they have  a blueberry flavor that has never made me sick. Good luck
  • I've been pretty nauseous for only 4 weeks.....well this would be day 3 of all day nausea. I've tried plain chips, crackers, soup, toast, ginger ale, and can't drink water without feeling really sick (been drinking gatorade instead which has been amazing to keep me hydrated!). After another long day with barely anything nutritious (aside from my morning fruit smoothie that I seem to be able to stomach).....I grabbed a can of v8 (which I should add really really don't like). Forced myself to chugg down the can and about 30mins later grabbed another since i started to feel bit hungry and less nauseous.....plus what's the harm in drinking 2 servings of veggies if u can't eat them right? Another 30 mins after that, I was up in the kitchen stuffing my face. Not sure if v8 is to thank but I know I'll definitely be trying it again!
  • The only thing that seems to work for me is gingerbread cookie icecream or any other form of icecream/dairy product. If this keeps up, I'm going to get so fat. :(

  • Oh I so feel your pain! I was so incredibly sick from week 5 on,  constant nausea, occasional vomiting and horrible heart burn/acid reflux. I suffered through it until my first dr appt at 9 weeks. Since then I have been taking diclegis and Zantac which has helped to manage it. My insurance won't pay for the diclegis though and I can't keep paying $8/day to be on it so my doctor said I could take unisom and B6 (the basic ingredients of diclegis). I've been doing that for 2 days now and I think it actually works better than diclegis for me. I'm 11 weeks 3 days now so hopefully I'm almost done with being sick. Hope you find some relief!
  • Found something that finally worked for me......plain rice and ground beef. Very plain, so is easy on tummy, and doesn't taste bad for being so bland. Also as silly as sounds, try eating with ur eyes closed. For me seemed to help a bit since physically looking at food was making me feel more nauseous. Found this worked best with food not hot (warm or cold was ok.....long as t wasn't letting off aroma through steam)
  • I've been eating saltines and just trying to be active. I find that the more I lay around, the worse I feel.
  • Sometimes it goes on all day and other days it even feels like I'm not pregnant. Amazing lol
  • My nausea has been dreadful. I am 10wks2ds I nibble on saltines and sip Gatorade but it doesn't really help. I was eating McDonalds a few weeks ago but honestly, now the smell of meat is repulsive. Chicken is the worst. I even tried to eat some mandarin oranges yet was repulsed because i swear they tasted like tuna. Before pregnancy, I drank water all the time but it has been harder to drink for some reason now. My pallet keeps changing I just keep telling myself the gagging and extreme nausea will be over soon hang in there.
  • I go tomorrow to find out how far I am. I have been super sick the last few days with nausea. It's been the last week but the last few days I've been throwing up and couldn't drink or eat anything with out it coming right back up. Finally someone suggested a sea band that goes on your wrist and I ate my first meal today and didn't throw it up. I took a nap and woke up feeling great. I usually. Hate ginger ale and now I like it and that seems to be helping also. I'm going to talk to my Dr in the morning about a prescription also bc I'm afraid to take this band off my wrist and getting sick again.
  • I'm 9 weeks and have had severe nausea since week 5. I tried anti-nausea (Nauzene) and sea bands. anti-nausea syrup worked for 4 days until I guess my body started to reject it and I vomited tons of this red liquid. This is when I knew I had to call my ob gyn and ask for something. Diclegis helps, but whenever I eat, I still get nauseous and when I overeat, I get really sick and vomit. It's awful because eating a bit is supposed to help but I feel I get most relief on an empty stomach. I'm hungry but am afraid to eat!

What's worse is taking the train every morning in NYC to my job in the city. When I don't get a seat, the motion worsens it. I've had to get off the train and sit on the bench for relief. I'm counting down the days until first trimester is over and I hope this goes away. Good luck ladies!
