Thyroid And Other Fun Syndromes/Diseases

So... since we're having babies/close to having babies I wanted to post this just as an FYI bc if someone had told me about this with DD1 it would have saved a HUGE headache. I've mentioned this a couple of times in earlier threads but here it is:

When I was pg with DD1 I gained 70lbs and I gained the weight quickly. I was doing yoga, eating healthy, and had no real reason to gain THAT much weight and gain it that quickly. My doctor just kept saying to eat healthier, watch my carb intake, etc. I'd never had any serious health issues beforehand or take meds for anything. Once I gave birth I went from 210lbs (yikes) to 220lbs, was overly tired (I'm not talking about normal FTM tired. I couldn't be trusted to be alone with DD bc I couldn't trust myself to not fall asleep and my reflexes were shot), I would cry often, and my hair started falling out in clumps. Now, this could sound normal and to my doctor it did. They put me on psych meds diagnosing me with PPD. I wasn't depressed, I didn't want to hurt myself or my child. I knew that wasn't it BUT I took the meds bc I don't have a doctrine and trusted my doctor. Then, I started talking to people that weren't there, getting agitated for no reason, I wouldn't understand language that people were talking (English) to me in, I was slurring my words, and hadn't even gotten out of the time period for the meds to start working.

Finally, desperate, I went to my PCP. She did a full work up blood test bc she said it didn't sound like PPD to her and asked if anyone had checked my thyroid. Long story short (well I'm trying to make it shorter), I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Normally TSH is 1-5. Mine was at 150+. I was immediately put on meds and the endocrinologist I saw said had someone not found this my levels were about to put me into a self induced coma. At which point my condition becomes fatal. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with Hoshimoto disease. Apparently I was born with it and my pg hormones brought it out of dormancy. It took me 2 years to get my levels normal, to lose the weight, to feel like myself again.

Had I given up and just listened to one doctor about my diagnosis I wouldn't be here. I just wanted to remind you ladies to be your best advocate for your medical care and listen to your bodies. PPD is real but just bc you just had a baby doesn't mean you should be brushed off and put on meds without proper testing. There are tons of other things that can effect you due to PP and hormones. This was just my experience. I don't say it to freak everyone out. I just wish someone had told me of the possibilities.

Re: Thyroid And Other Fun Syndromes/Diseases

  • I've got Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well (I was diagnosed 8 years ago) and although mine just happened to show up out of nowhere, I can 100% see how Drs would get it confused with PPD but am so so glad you kept on them and finally had a dr check your thyroid hormones. It's not something to mess with!

  • Just to add, I don't want to get into the whole big long story...but I was on bc for 10+ years, I stopped taking it about 6 months before DH and I decided to start trying to conceive since I had heard it can take a little while to get pregnant after taking the pill for so long. About 4 weeks after I stopped taking the pill I got slammed with symptoms like a freight train. My legs turned into jelly, I had constant flu aches that never went away, I had migraines when I had zero history of headaches or migraines of any kind, I was dropping things, my speech was slurred, I couldn't walk or talk or feed or bathe myself when I would "flare" during each month for periods of time. During these flares my constant flu aches changed from that to feeling like somebody was slamming me with a hammer in the back, hips, knees along with all of my other symptoms. I got pregnant and these symptoms magically went away and we are terrified of them coming back. Clearly again, this was all hormonal. I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia even though my Drs said if it was fibromyalgia they'd never seen such a severe and debilitating fibromyalgia, but they simply couldn't figure out what was going on. Hormones are real and they play a really big part in maintaining one's health. When they get thrown out of whack for whatever reason, the result can be super debilitating. Like @doozer1345 said, be your own best advocate and make sure you have a medical team who's willing to investigate and not just throw a blanket diagnosis on you and hand you an anti-depressant.
  • I absolutely believe that PPD goes under-diagnosed, but good for you for getting more information and getting the correct diagnosis!
I went to my PCP about 9months postpartum last time, and he didn't want to run bloodwork because I was still nursing, so he said he wouldn't medicate me anyway...I thought that was a little strange, but he agreed to run thyroid and other things.
