GTKY - Tell us about your kids/fur babies!

I know we've all stated whether or not we have kids or fur babies, but I thought it'd be fun to have a thread to actually talk ABOUT them a little bit. Because what mama doesn't like talking about her babies!? So, if you're as bored as I am today, feel free to answer these.

How many sons/daughters/fur babies do you have? What are their ages (and breeds of the fur babies)?

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?

Brag about a big milestone or accomplishment for one or more of your babies!

Re: GTKY - Tell us about your kids/fur babies!

  • Here's mine.

How many sons/daughters/fur babies do you have? What are their ages (and breeds of the fur babies)?
One daughter (5), one step-son (5), one corgie/beagle mix (3), and one orange cat (age unknown - probably 3-5)

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?
This morning my daughter said, "Mom, I am just not in the mood today. I think I'll go back to bed." Which she 100% got from me. My step-son was super cute the other day, talking about how he can't wait to get a new wagon with 3 seats so his new baby brother can sit next to him.

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?
My dog is a barker and a whiner, and he's also a rescue we've only had for a few months, so we're trying desperately to find a way to stop the incessant barking before baby arrives.

Brag about a big milestone or accomplishment for one or more of your babies!
-I got my daughter's preschool evaluation back yesterday and I'm so proud! She recognizes the entire alphabet - upper and lower case; she can write her name, write numbers 1-20, do simple addition/subtraction...plus she recognizes about 10 sight words so far from working at home together! I think she's ready for Kindergarten!
-My step-son's big accomplishment lately has been that he just moved from a "B" level to a "C" level in reading! This is HUGE because he went into Kindergarten this year not even knowing any of his letters (he never went to preschool and his mom & dad didn't work with him at all prior to school starting). Going into a "C" level means that he's where they expect all kids to be by the end of Kindergarten, so this is exciting news!

I have 1 daughter who is 18 mos.

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?

DDs most recent thing she likes to do is say bite and then try to force food into our mouths. I was facetiming my sister the other day and DD kept trying to feed my sister by putting her spoon to my sisters mouth on the phone screen.

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?

DD is extremely high spirited, she is happy all the time unless she is tired but she is also extremely hard headed and wants to be independent all the time. It's a blessing and a curse really.

We just moved DD to her big girl bed. I miss being able to just laying her in her crib for bed time but I'm glad we will have this adjustment out of the way by the time LO arrives. We had 3 nights so far and last night was definitely the worst. We need to figure out how this new routine is going to work.
  • How many sons/daughters/fur babies do you have? What are their ages (and breeds of the fur babies)?
Kids - we have an 11 yr old dd, a 7 yr old ds, & 1 yr old dd. Dogs- 3 pitt bulls, 7 yr old female, 2 yr old male, 11 week old female.

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?
The baby girl and the female puppy are constantly doing cute things all the time. Our older son and daughter really surprised me a couple of days ago when I walked in on them cuddled in the recliner together reading books. So cute especially because they are at the age where they love to fight with each other.

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?
This is a hard one. With my 11 yr old it has been an emotional roller coaster for a while since she started getting her period. We try really hard to relate to her in any way we can so she feels like she can talk to us and express her feelings. Ds is pretty mellow, gets along with everyone, is a super happy kid all the time. He just doesn't like chores or cleaning his room so we have to stay on top of that. Dogs are dogs and will be dogs. They love to play, run, jump, eat, poop, and do it all over again. I feel the worst thing with them is house training!

Our youngest dd turned 1 yesterday! 11 yr old dd got all A's on her latest report card! Ds is playing little league baseball for the very first time and connected his bat with the ball 6 times at practice!
  • How many sons/daughters/fur babies do you have? What are their ages (and breeds of the fur babies)?

We have a corgi, and three cats. One of the cats is an Abyssinian, one looks to be a Maine Coon mix, and the third is a tabby.

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?

My cat, and my husband's cat fell asleep snuggled up. They woke up and gave me a look like "CAUGHT!!!" and hissed at each other. I took a picture before they woke up, I have proof they snuggled!

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?
My cat from before we met is the Abbyssinian. They are very... particular. She also doesn't like to share me. She sleeps between me and my husband at night. I think the biggest challenge is yet to come - teaching her she has to share with the small pink human. Honestly, I spoiled this cat rotten, and am paying for it now. At least it was a cat I learned my permissive parenting lesson on ...

  • How many sons/daughters/fur babies do you have? What are their ages (and breeds of the fur babies)?
We have one fur daughter - a 5 year old pit-hound mix - I adore her

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?
We were on vacation last week, so just greeting me when I picked her up melted my heart.

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?
I would say going through separation anxiety. This took a lot of work, both with training and repairing things she had damaged. It was also very hard emotionally. She has been the only "child" since she came to live with us at 8 weeks, so I hope the transition to having a little human in the house goes well. We're working on the transition already by letting her sniff baby items as we get them.

Brag about a big milestone or accomplishment for one or more of your babies!
When she hit about 4-4.5, she calmed down a LOT. She still has huge bursts of energy that can be overwhelming for some, but I wouldn't have it any other way. We live in a small, rural subdivision and I can let her sit on the front porch while I'm sitting in the rocking chair. Used to, she would have chased and barked at any and everything. Now, she will sit and watch kids ride bikes by and families walk their dogs with no issues. I NEVER thought we would get to this point with her.

One and only fur baby, Winston the Westie!! Just turned 4 last Saturday! Stubborn little guy who LOVES attention from not other dogs but humans.

What's the cutest thing any of your babies (fur or human) has done or said recently?

Thanks to you all, I've been changing up my snoogle pillow to get more comfortable so I had it in a ring shape and left it on the couch.

Winston saw that I had left my blanket under the pillow and thought, "wow, this is a very nice version of my current bed." See pic here and cue the heart melt:

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal?

It's right now that I am struggling with. He used to be with us at all times. If we sleep on the couch, he's there with us. At night, he's in our bed snuggled up between us. DH has not been allowing Winston to come up to the bed with us as of late to train him for what's to come so every night, when we get in bed, my heart breaks when Winston has his "pity me" eyes sitting patiently on the floor...just hoping we pick him up. He cries for about five minutes and eventually lays down on his bed which DH placed next to ours so he's still sleeping with us, just not in our bed.

He's also the perfect definition of a terrier (West Highland White Terrier). He will bark at any knocks on the wall, door, you name it. I can't control his barking but now that's our next challenge because we don't want him excessively barking out loud once baby comes. We haven't figured this one out yet. Any suggestions are welcomed!

Oh geez, my 17 yr old is always teaching the 21 mo old to say funny stuff  lately it's weiner boy. ...and brother my homie.....

What has been the biggest challenge of raising or training each child and/or animal? My 17 year old I had at 17 so we've grown up together, luckily he was the easiest baby on the planet and has always been an easy kid never really needed discipline etc.  the 21 mo old is  polar opposite lol mr stubborn mr independent you get the drift. Our shihtzu and shepherd are easy peasy the pitbull we are working on her training she's a huge love bug but an ocd licker which grosses me out ....

Brag about a big milestone or accomplishment for one or more of your babies! The 17 yr old is debating college (and getting lots of offers because hes a 4 sport athlete ) vs. military . We will be proud either direction he takes. The 21 mo old is our lil clown. his speech and intelligence is crazy for his age (of course I'm biased lol)

How many babies do you have?
I have two DDs aged 4 and 22 months. We also have a 1 year old shelter kitty.

Cutest thing: my girls share a room and dd1 was getting into bed and told dd2 to "lay down like Sissy. It's time to fo night night."
She also wanted to name the cat Aubrey Snickers or fruit snack. We compromised with baileywick. Baileywick is from the TV show Sofia the First. Dd2 can't say baileywick so she calls him boo boo.

Biggest challenges: dd1 is extremely strong-willed. We have very similar personalities. It makes me feel like I'm raising myself. Dd2 is far more relaxed but about to enter the terrible toddler years. Kitty is easy!

Milestones: nothing lately, but I plan to start potty training dd2 next week fingers crossed!
  • @Lynnlove28 Your daughter sounds JUST like mine! She has always been super outgoing, constantly happy and cheery, but also VERY independent. She's 5 now and believe me, the wanting to be independent is eventually 100% blessing! Now that she is actually capable of doing most things on her own (e.g. getting dressed, brushing her teeth, putting shoes on, etc.) it's awesome! But I do remember the struggle of an 18-month-old who wanted no help with anything...lol.

@AliKay20 if you figure out how to hone in the barking, let me know! Haha. We're struggling with the same thing with our corgi/beagle mix. We're currently trying the spray bottle method because the bark collar didn't phase him a bit.

  • We have reached a new milestone/achievement and I am so excited that I have to share. Our youngest dd just turned a year old and for the very first time slept ALL night long in her own crib! I woke up so many times to check on her because I am used to her ending up in our bed and having to eat at least once at night. Hopefully this is the start of a whole new sleeping pattern for her!
  • @jamiesc58 That's awesome!! Fingers crossed that this is the start of a new routine! Just in time to give you a couple of months of restful nights before the new baby!
