Migraines

For all my fellow migraine sisters out there: how are you hanging in? I've seen a few comments about migraines here and there in different threads, but thought it might be helpful to consolidate our thoughts.

Have your migraines increased, decreased, or stayed the same this pregnancy? How have you been treating them and/or preventing them? Is it working for you, or are you still searching for a solution?

Re: Migraines

  • I'm up at 4:22 am (and have been for several hours) on account of a migraine—one of the worst I've had in months—accompanied by nosebleed and a vomitfest. I didn't get a single migraine for the first month and a half of my pregnancy, which is unheard of for me, but for the past two weeks they've come back to bite at least every other day, sometimes more.

Trying to get by without my normal medicine has been rough. I've taken to drinking coffee only when I get migraines, and I take Tylenol as well. It works a little bit sometimes, like when I catch the migraine super early, but other times it doesn't seem to make a dent. I also don't love the idea of taking Tylenol multiple times a day, every oth day... Mine are caused mostly by changes in barometric pressure, so there's not much I've been able to do in terms of prevention. I'm really struggling here; the migraines make it so much harder to do life. Any suggestions would be very welcome!

  • @grannysmith912  wow, every other day is really rough.

I've had 2 so far. I took Tylenol and lots of ice packs on my neck. Made a little dent, but mostly just had to lay down and wait them out. Migraines and not being able to take my normal meds were a pretty big fear about pregnancy. Dr said if I started getting them very frequently, there was something safe she could prescribe, can't remember what it was though.
  • I get migraines occasionally and have found that magnesium oil helps. It is perfectly safe and pretty cheap. You just spray it on. I get it on Amazon.
  • Mine had backed off for the first tri for the most part but I've had a couple mild ones in the last week (nothing that some Tylenol, caffeine and a nap couldn't kill). My major trigger is sleep deprivation (aka night shift) so since I've been off work, I haven't really had that problem. It'll be interesting when I go back to see if they come back in full force. I don't know what I'll do if they do come back, I can't function without T3s or Excedrin Migraine if they're really bad...

  • @HeyBooHey I've taken magnesium supplements before, but never tried (or heard of) magnesium oil. I'll look into it!

It is much easier for your body to absorb.

Sounds like it--the idea of swallowing any more pills/capsules/tablets than I have to right now is appalling to me. Do you take it daily, or just when you feel you're at risk of getting a migraine?

ETA: Also, I see that a lot of them on Amazon are magnesium chloride solutions. Is that the type you use? When I was reading about it, it looked like some people used different elemental combinations (e.g., magnesium citrate).
  • @grannysmith912 I have the Ancient Minerals brand. I use it occasionally when I remember and then daily when I am feeling symptoms.
  • I had slight migraines weeks 4-6 and they came back with a vengeance in week 9. For me the headache has never been the major issue, it's the blinding aura and back and neck pain. I came close to taking Tylenol last night for my back pain, but DH gave me s massage that helped.

I got a massive migraine the day my baby's heart stopped with my last pregnancy after not having any that whole pregnancy, so I have to say getting bad migraines this week the day after a great ultrasound has freaked me out quite a bit. Hearing others having them during normal pregnancies is helpful for my anxiety!! I have no cramping or anything and my fatigue and other slight pregnancy symptoms are still hanging around.
  • I have gotten two so far. I hope it's just another weird side effects of all the extra hormones and will lessen over time like morning sickness.

I had to go to the emergency room once at 8 weeks.  They were able to male it better with IV phenergan.  I haven't had any really bad ones since then.  Overall, they are much better now than they were before pregnancy.  I take fioricet if needed for migraines and my neuro said it was safe. Mist headaches go away with Tylenol and caffeine.
  • So far mine have been less, just a couple minor ones.  Though I do find it difficult to differentiate the last couple weeks between bad nausea with a headache and a migraine.  I think they've mostly been headaches though as some of my other symptoms have been lacking except for a couple of times.

  • I'm struggling today.  Headache work me up this morning. It's by far the worst I have have since being KU.  Pretty sure it is a migraine but I missed the aura because I was asleep.  I wish I had a hot pack for my face.  I feel like that might help me.

  • @MrsBinPA I only ever wake up with migraines so I don't ever experience aura - I don't envy those that do! I recommend some Tiger Balm on your temples, forehead and neck...makes a huge difference for me when I have a migraine.
