Stripping Membranes - Did this work for you?

With my first my doc stripped my membranes at 39 weeks 4 days....and I went into labor that evening.

This is my 3rd. I was 1 cm dilated at today's OB appt so my doc decided to strip my membranes (I'm 38 wk 3 days) just to see if that helps things along a bit.

Just curious how this has gone for other folks?

Re: Stripping Membranes - Did this work for you?

  • I'm curious as well! I'm getting mine stripped tomorrow at my 39 week appointment!

  • From what I've read (not personal experience), it's typically about 50/50 you go into labor within 3 days or it doesn't affect when you go into labor.
  • I had mine done with my first and it did nothing.

  • I had my membranes stripped at 39w 1d and went into labor the next afternoon. I honestly think it was a coincidence though. I was also walking a lot and had sex that day.
  • Both pregnancies I had the baby within two days after stripping membranes.  But my doc didn't do it til 41wks (last pregnancy) and 40 wks this pregnancy.

  • I had one done at 39 weeks and one at 39+3 this pregnancy, both failed, I'm still pregnant! My first I had it done on a Thursday 39+5 and went into labor Saturday night had my baby on my due date, I think it was just coincidence. If your bodies not ready it's not ready unfortunately!
  • With #3, after my water broke at 10:45pm with no contrax all night or the next am, he did an "aggressive exam," which I assume is having your membranes stripped, at 11am. Strong contrax started at 3pm, baby was out at 10:40pm. Obviously different because my water had already been broken, though.

  • I had mine swept at 39 weeks this pregnancy, and went into labor just a little over 48 hours later. I was only 1 cm and 40% effaced, so I think it helped speed me along.
  • Did y'all ask your doctor about doing this, or was your doctor the one who mentioned it? My doctor hasn't said anything about trying to strip mine. I wouldn't even know about it if it weren't for the fact that I google everything and a couple of friends who have mentioned having it done. Just curious!
  • I had mine done at my prenatal check (38w4d). I was in labor that evening and baby was born the following morning!

My doctor just did it during my cervix check. She said "Let's see if we can get things moving a bit".
  • I had a sweep done on Monday at 11:30 a.m. and went into labor at 9 p.m. on Wednesday. I was 4cms dilated though. I just needed a little push to get things going.
  • My dr brought it up as an option to me at my appt (38+4) but it turned out I was in labor already at that point.
  • I had it done twice. Once at 38 weeks and then at 38+5. Went into labor that night.

With my first, I had it done at 39 & 40. Went into labor on 40+1

  • When my water broke, the midwife did a cervix check. She went on to say that my membranes were still intact. I think she gave things a little nudge forward and contractions began minutes after.

  • Had mine stripped yesterday at 40+3 and nothing is happening yet! I was so hopeful it was going to kick start something......
  • Just had an appointment at 39+4 and I was dilated to a 3 and 80% effaced. He did the sweep, so I'm hoping for some action pretty soon! I'll update if there's anything to update with.
  • Swept at 39 weeks 6 days, had the baby the next day. Obviously it's hard to figure out cause and effect so late in gestation when you have a good chance of going into labor anyway, but it "felt" like stripping helped...it caused some cramping that seemed to transition into contractions.
  • Stripping update (HA!):

24 hours after having it done I was having pretty regular contractions...went to L&D where they checked me...I had gone from 1 to 2 over night but the contractions slowed significantly and I made no more progress. They sent me home.

I had my membranes stripped Monday. It's now Thursday and no signs of labor. I did lose my mucus plug this morning, but no contractions or anything......

So, looks like it was pointless.
  • Had mine swept yesterday morning and could feel changes happening almost immediately. Lower back pain, menstrual-like cramping, and intermittent contractions by evening. Contractions gone today but lower back pain still here. Hoping for more developments!
  • That's how mine went. I had a bloody show 2 days after my sweep and went into active labor about 14 hrs later!
  • I'm 40w6d. Had my sweep yesterday. It made me bleed, but that's all.

I was due April 15th. At my appointment yesterday, I was only 1cm, 35% effaced. So, it'll probably be a few more days before baby comes.

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • I had mine stripped on Tuesday afternoon. I lost my mucus plug that night and had a whole bunch of bloody show Wednesday morning and a ton of contractions Wednesday night. They were between 5-10 apart 60 seconds long and got down to about 3-5 minutes apart. I felt like I was starving so I ate some middle of the night oatmeal and my contractions tapered off to basically nothing
  • I'm still pregnant :(
  • I am too. WTF.
  • I thought for sure I wouldn't be because I was between a 3-4 when they stripped my membranes.
  • For both of my pregnancies, it took 2 "strippings" for me to go into labor.

Had mine stripped a couple days ago for the first time, at 39wks. No worse then the cervical check. But 4 days later, I have only had some brownish discharge and had minimal cramping. So, still no baby action... I will have my OB strip them again this week if I make it to that appt.
  • Ugh, had mine done today and it was pretty unpleasant. Achy and crampy ever since, but nothing that seems productive...
  • Stripped on Wednesday... nothing came of it except back and stomach cramps.
  • I had mine stripped at 41w3d and nothing happened. Went back for another appt at 41w6d and had them stripped again. Contractions started that day but didn't get regular until about 8pm. Had the baby 6 hours later at 42 weeks exactly.

  • ^^ It seems like the second time works a lot for people.. I wonder if it is coincidence. I'm having it done a second time tomorrow!
  • I had it done at 39 weeks and then again at 39+6. The second time I had contractions for about 5 hours but they fizzled out. Here I am, 40+6 and still no baby.
  • I've had my membranes stripped twice now. Once last week at 39+5 and again yesterday at 40+4. My doctor said I'm still only 1 cm dilated and wants me to come in for cervidil before induction next week, as she put it, if we have any hope of a vaginal delivery. Anybody else had a similar experience? Going in for induction at only 1 cm but able to deliver vaginally? I was really hoping to avoid a c section.
  • Worked for me. Contractions started within a few hours of having it done. Chances are good she was probably nearly ready to go already, but it may have helped speed the process along a bit.
  • With my first I wasn't dialated or effaced at all and I was able to have a vaginal delivery being induced. It was long but it's possible
  • @kitkat8713 I was 1cm dilated at my last dr appointment and scheduled for induction with cervidil prep. When I got there for the prep, I was 3-4 cm dilated and 90% effaced... So I didn't have to do the pep. The cervix checks were so crazy that by the time of the induction... I was 5 cm dilAted and 100% effaced. My recommendation either way, take the sleeping pill. You won't be sleeping for at least a week after the baby is born...

I mean seriously, 2 rounds of stupid membrane stripping and no such luck. Still pregnant over here, 4 days past due date. And I was so excited about April's birthstone.... Now I have to settle for emerald. Sigh.
