WWYD, dump the MW?

WWYD, time for a new midwife?

So, I just got home from MFM and I'm thinking about dumping my MW. For the last few weeks I've been playing phone tag with them and because of certain symptoms and lab results she was thinking cholestasis or gall bladder problems. MW had me set up an appt with MFM because she told me they could ultrasound my liver and gall bladder and help me figure out what's going on. Then she tells me to set an appt to see my PCP to see if it's pregnancy-related or not. My PCP said it's cholestasis and that I need to start treatment right away. I balk and say I'll see what MFM says and go from there. I go to MFM today and they get me in the ultrasound room and the tech says, "You're here for a NT scan, correct?" Uhm, no. I explain to her what's going on and she says ok and steps out. She comes back a few minutes later and says there are no doctors available to speak to and there's nothing she can do. I get really upset because I'm terrified something is wrong with me and they can't do anything to help. She steps out again and comes back with an RN. I explain everything to her and she kind of stares at me blankly and says she has no idea why I'm there and that I need to see a gastroenterologist, but we can still do the NT scan if I want. I told them I specifically told my MW that I didn't want a NT and that I have no idea how or why they made an appt for that. After going back and forth for another 10 minutes I just say fuck it and ask them to do a viability scan because I already had my heart set on seeing baby anyways. The scan goes fine. Afterwards, a doctor comes in (hmmm, where was he before?) and talks for a few minutes and says MFM can't do squat for me unless there is a problem with the pregnancy/baby and everything looks fine. I need to see a GI specialist but it's definitely not cholestasis at this point, and he's not even sure it's my gall bladder either because he says my labs aren't that bad. So, I just wasted a lot of time and money because the MW is stupid and doesn't know how to communicate. I don't even think there is a word for how angry I am right now.

Re: WWYD, dump the MW?

  • I would be calling someone for another opinion, be it a midwife or an ob. I'd also find a GI to consult with for peace of mind. I'm sorry they are giving you the run around, that's ridiculous

  • I second what @coffee89 said, would absolutely be seeking a GI and another MW or OB. That is all completely unprofessional and you don't need more added worry and stress on top of the normal PG worries and stress.
  • As soon as I got home I called my PCP and requested a referral to see the GI specialist. I will schedule that asap.

I'm just so frustrated because this could easily have been avoided and seeing specialists is so damn expensive (especially with the way our insurance is set up).

  • I third the previous sentiments. That is incredibly frustrating, I'm sorry you're getting this crazy run around and no answers :(

  • I'm so sorry you had a frustrating and expensive experience! I'm glad your scan went well though, and I hope you get some answers soon from the correct medical professionals about whatever is wrong!  <3
  • I'm so sorry you had to go through that and don't have your answers. I would be so frustrated.
I would definitely find another MW. I wouldn't be able to go through the rest of my pregnancy wondering if my MW even knew what she was talking about.

  • Ugh, how frustrating! I echo doing what others suggested and I hope you get the RIGHT answers soon.

  • I would definitely get a second opinion and I think I would look for a permanent change in MW or OB. When it boils down to it, you aren't going to trust her now and you don't want someone you don't trust delivering your baby.

  • I would definitely get a second opinion/find a MW or OB who will respect your time and not send you on a wild goose chase.

Fwiw, it is possible to have cholestasis this early but it is extremely rare. I'd definitely want additional tests to rule out gallstones vs cholestasis because with cholestasis you will need additional monitoring. Hugs, mama!
