Pregnant after IF

who has had some sort of bleeding??

I have learned that bleeding in early pregnancy is way more common than I ever realized but still worries me like crazy.  I would love to hear other peoples  stories about any bleeding to help ease my mind.
I am 8.5 weeks and last night started bleeding bright red blood.  Went to the ER and everything looked fine.  Baby had a heartbeat and the bleeding stopped after about 1.5-2 hours.  Went to my RE this morning again and baby looked great but they saw some blood near the cervix and said to probably expect more.
What's your story??

I had two series of bleeding scares. My first was towards the end of my first trimester (I want to say 11ish weeks). I had some bleeding after a BM no straining or anything. I heard that was pretty common, though so I didn't think much of it. I was still bleeding the next few times I went to the bathroom. The third time, I had no spotting but had tissue come out that looked whitish gray with dots of bright red. The doctor had me come in to make sure the baby's heartbeat was still strong, and it was. The doctor doesn't know where the tissue came from, but said it could have come off the cervix.

The second series started soon after I entered the second trimester. It wasn't "brought on" by anything like a BM or sex. It started out  as pink spotting that progressively got redder but I would still consider it to be spotting. Then, I started having clots the size of my pinky tip with just a few bigger. The doctor had me come in to check the heartbeat and make sure I wasn't having incompetent cervix issues. Everything sounded and looked fine. The spotting continued for almost a month straight. I'd usually have a one day break every 3-4 days and whenever it started back up again, I would have tiny clots. The doctor had no explanation for the bleeding, but said I did have pink and swollen glands on my cervix. My cervix was long, but she could put a pinky tip in but not through the opening. Apparently that is a normal varient, but I had to pay close attention to any feelings of pressure or heaviness in case it was an early indication of an incompetent cervix. It was a stressful month! Luckily and knock on wood, I haven't had bleeding since about 19 weeks, and my cervix length looked good at my 20 week anatomy scan.

  • Hey there ! I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this ! I had bleeding around week 5-6 . Started as spotting then was very very heavy . Then it kind of tapered off into spotting . My doc took me off of crinone because in addition to having a SCH he thought my body was having a reaction to the crinone . Since switching to IM shots I have had no bleeding . But I have had 2 nightmares since about bleeding . I still get nervous every time I go to the bathroom . I am such a worrier . Try not to worry like me ! If the doc says you are good you are fine ! They know their stuff . Bleeding isn't always bad

  • Sorry to hear about your scare.
I to had bleeding, but compare to the two previous ladies it was very minor. (But scared me like hell) I was in week 5. US didn't show any embryo just a ys, but they weren't to worried as I was early. At week 6 I had a new us, embryo was 4 times as big (just a gray spot)
Havent had any bleeding since and am 10 weeks.
Still scared almost every time I go to the toilet (and boy does one pee a lot), it's tough to let that worry go.

Hang in there. Even though they are very very tiny they are fighters my doctor told me!

  • I had light bleeding then spotting a week ago, technically 5w3d. Went in for my first ultrasound yesterday and sure enough the tech saw a small sac of blood outside the uterus. She said baby was fine but blood sac-thing will probably cause more bleeding as the uterus expands and pushes on it.  Even tho that is a relief, I'll still be praying thru the next 6 weeks and then some. Sorry you had to go to the ER

  • I had a day of heavy bleeding bright red blood with clots around 5-6 weeks. Scared the heck out of us, turned out to be another case of subchorionic hemorrhage.  If you have a collection of blood near your cervix, sounds to me like you also have a SCH. I had some there as well after the bleeding stopped and was warned that it may come out,  too, but it ended up reabsorbing and I didn't have any more bleeding. Fingers crossed for you that this doesn't cause you any more issues!
  • I also had one day of bleeding at 6 weeks 2 days. I had an ultrasound right away and baby was fine. It was a hematoma. My RE put me on daily PIO shots in addition to the crinone I was already taking. The red blood only lasted one day, but had brown spotting for about 10 days after. I'm now 10 weeks and baby is developing great. At my 8 week u/s, I was told hematoma was healing.

I've heard that hematomas are a lot more common in IVF pregnancies. I had my first appointment with my midwife yesterday and she said bleeding is very common and a chance of recurrence later in the first trimester.
  • I have spotted every day. It's pink/light brown.  I am taking progesterone, a capsule inserted into the vagina nightly.  So they attribute it to that. I've had 3 u/s, last two with the heartbeat, which is nice and strong (141 bmp first time, in the 160s second time) and all looks normal. *knock on wood*

  • Freaking out ladies had a bad stressful day at work and now I come home from work to find a dark brown discharge in my panties and a very small blood clot I called office waiting to hear from them. This happen to anyone? Im 6 weeks Thursday
  • @ultratomato Because it's brown and the blood clot is small, it's most likely nothing to worry about (though, I know that's impossible). If you haven't yet heard from your doctor and/or it is after hours (I'm not sure what time zone you are in), you can call labor and delivery and speak with a nurse there for peace of mind. Until I went to a childbirth class, I didn't know I should or could call labor and delivery with after hours bleeding and other concerns (this would have saved a lot of stress with my bleeding episodes mentioned above). I figured I'd let you know that is possibly a route to take with your doctor/hospital in case you are still seeking peace of mind.

  • @riveridgional the nurse called me back and said as long as I'm not cramping and it's not red or heavy I should be ok but they moved my ultrasound to early tmrw am
  • @ultratomato I am sorry you are bleeding ! I know it's not really possible but try not to freak . I've read that a majority of bleeding in early pregnancy is not a cause for concern . I had all diff kinds of bleeding early . Mine started as brown and light no cramps and later I had bright red with cramps and I'm still fine . Good luck tomorrow hope all is well !!

  • I had light pink spotting at almost 6 weeks on a Friday at work, and I about lost my mind. Called my RE and he said bed rest for the weekend and to keep my first ultrasound appt for Monday. Spotting stopped after a couple hours, and the babies were totally fine at the us. Very strong heartbeats :)

I also had one episode of pink/brown spotting at 7 weeks, but I stayed a lot calmer, and again, babies were fine. 13 weeks today!
  • Thank goodness for this thread. I just read it in detail, twice hahaha.

I had bleeding on 5w5d, started as brown discharge, turned to red bleeding. Didn't soak a pad, but stained a pad and there was one oblong clot- FREAKED ME OUT. I was switched from inserts to PIO injections that night, no bleeding for 3 days. Last night, before bed I wiped and saw brown discharge and 1 tiny red clot.
Sono today looked okay, significant growth, I finally can see a yolk  no heartbeat yet though (6w2d) hoping for one on Thursday.

I had a lot of bleeding a few nights ago. It was pretty heavy for a couple of hours and then started to slow down over the next several hours. There were no clots and I did not really have any cramping. The doctor saw me the next day and felt it was probably caused by the sac separating a little. He said to stop exercising for a month and not to lift anything heavy. Since my work is very light over the summer, it was okay to work.

Bleeding started again last night, but nothing like the other night so I was more relaxed. I put myself on bedrest for a majority of the day and was out for a couple of hours late in the afternoon. **sorry to be disgusting, but ....**    Since I'm on Endometrin inserts, any blood that I see now seems to just be coming out with discharge from the insert. So I don't think I'm activity bleeding even if I see a little blood. I'm being careful not to put the insert in too far, since I'm worried about shaking things up too much in there.

I don't think I'll be on complete bedrest tomorrow, but I'm still going to be cautious until my next appointment. I'm just going to do some light cleaning around the house and then take lots of breaks in between. I know I'm not in the clear yet, but I'm not quite as scared as I was the first time I saw blood.

    @LynnNJ
You should consider switching from the inserts to the PIO injections. The inserts can cause a lot of sensitivity and can irritate you down there. Call your doctor and see what he/she thinks.
Shots are a pain in the ass, literally- but will maybe eliminate some of the bleeding from irritation

@Colleen0516 I only have today and tomorrow,  and then I'm done with them. I really found them easy and didn't have a problem.  I will likely go through ivf again in another year, so I will consider switching then.

I'm on my second bleeding episode now too... First was at 15 weeks, I'm 17 now and again the same thing. First time we went to Er, everything fine, blood in cervix, no hemorrhage....this time i called the Midwife, she said to wait for a proper vaginal ultrasound, which is tomorrow... I hope this doesn't keep happening it's stressful. Mwe never found cause for my infertility....I wonder if its polyps or something.
  • I went to the ER at 10 week with A LOT of bleeding. through my pants and a pad in an hour bleeding. They said it was likely a hematoma. Gave me a rhogam shot (I'm rh-) and told me to rest for a few days. DD is now 2.5 years old.
