Anyone else have a bf baby that is slowly gaining weight? DS was 10.5 at birth and is almost 13 lbs at 12 weeks. He's bf with 8oz of formula daily due to low supply and slow weight gain. He didn't reach birth weight until about 5 weeks old.
Our pediatrician said that as long as weight gain is consistent, she isn't worried. I'll put it in perspective - my little girl was 8.0 when she was born, 7.1 when we took her home, and is now 10.9 at 13 weeks. She has been consistently gaining a pound a month, which is on the low end of "normal," but if the ped isn't worried, neither am I. If you're concerned, ask your doctor
Ours was gaining weight slowly due to low supply as well. It took him over 3 weeks to get back to birth weight. He was 8.13 at birth and at his one month was only 9.6. At two month he was up to 11.8. He's beengetting a bottle after every feeding for a while now and that's been helpful.
Breast feeding and pumping with a little more than we need (she eats 3ozs i can pump 4ozs). Little girl was 5.4 pounds and19 inches at birth 4.13 when we went home and is 9.10 as of my weekly home weighing friday at 12 weeks. Her pedi is concerned a little bit abour her weight gain because it has been speradic and shown sings of leveling off which is why I weigh her at home. There's talk about doing formula supplementing but she is proportionate and not skinny. Lots of little fat rolls on her legs and arms! She's just now fitting into 3 month clothes and size 2 diapers. She is very petite and narrow and not bulky like some babies.
My son was 6lbs 10oz when he was born and is at 11lbs now at 16 weeks. As long as your baby is gaining wait it should be fine. If they start losing the. There is something to worry about.
My daughter was EBF and she was always small and still is. She never went crazy with weight gain and was 20 lbs at a year and now my son who is also EBF is over 16 lbs at 16 weeks! If your doctor isn't concerned then I wouldn't worry as long as he is eating and having dirty diapers.
I was just about to post about this! My lo is 12wks. I'm feeling anxiety about his weight. He's ebf and left the hospital at 8.6 and now is 11.12. He's long though 24". I calculated it out and he puts on 4.5oz a week give or take and that's average. Some are people just tall and thin like dh. My dd was a chunker. She was a full pound heavier at this age and they were the same birth wieght. But she's short and thick like me.
Oh man! I cried at her two-month check up. Born at 6.14, dropped to 6.5 and then 7.0 at two weeks. At two months she was 9.6. I am not sure what she is now at 12 weeks but pedi was not concerned. She is still gaining and is very healthy. Some babes just gain slowly. He mentioned the EBF babies will go up and down, to ignore the percentile, and know that all is going just fine.
I'm glad to hear other moms are going through this too. My DS was born at 7lb4oz, left the hospital at 6lb11oz, two weeks was 7lb5oz, one month was 8lb2oz and 2 months was 10lb2oz. His 4 month is this week and I think he will be right around 12lbs bc I have been watching his weight at home. He's EBF and got RSV at about 2 1/2 months which slowed his weight gain for about 3 weeks. He's super tall and lean like both DH and I were kids and he's meeting his milestones and our pediatrician has said not to worry bc he is gaining even tho it's slow so I have to keep reminding myself to not look at the percentile that he is growing and meeting milestones and that's what matters. We'll see what the doc said this week for our 4 month check up
@JanMommy2under2 my LO was also 10.5 when she was born! From what my ped says babies that are born heavier gain more slowly. My LO was 13 pounds at her 2 month appointment so hardly any gain! Her doctor says that she's perfectly healthy tho.
I've been dealing with these same issues. LO was 7lb 15oz at birth, and came home from the hospital at 7lbs 3oz. It took her over three weeks to get back up to birth weight. We must have done four weight checks in that three week time span! Then, at her two month check up, she was only 10lbs. Her pedi said to try to keep her on the breast longer during feeds, and to up her ounces during bottle feeds (she drinks pumped milk while I'm working). We had a weight check three weeks after that, and she had only gained 9 ounces! We've had to add rice cereal to her bottles in the hopes that it will help her gain more weight. The concern isn't that she is small, just that she won't maintain a growth curve. She was born in the 75th percentile, and is now in the 8th. She is hitting all of her milestones though, so we're not super concerned. Just trying to fatten her up a bit!
That Sounds like us. He was 12 lbs a month ago, yesterdays appt out him at 12.8. He's mostly breastfed and given about 6-8 Oz of formula but the dr said don't force feed and if he seems satisfied at the breast don't give a bottle after. He said some babies just have a fast metabolism and since he has plenty of wet and poopy diapers and is hitting all his milestones not to worry.
Re: slow weight gain for bf baby
Edit. She is also exclusively breastfed.
