BPP & Down syndrome

I went to my specialist Doctor this morning for my ultrasound I get every 4 weeks to make sure baby doesn't get a tumor in his brain or heart due to a medical condition I have. She said he looked great other than his legs and arms are now measuring 4 weeks behind and everything else is normal so Down syndrome was mentioned again which was also mentioned before for a bright spot in his heart .. I denied the testing but since it was brought up again I figured I should probably do it so we can prepare if so. I will love him either way but it's so nerve wrecking :( She said its most likely just genetic because I'm only 5'2 and my fiancé is 5'6. I also have to start Biophysical profiles weekly along with my weekly check ups. Does anyone else get these? I'm hoping I don't end up having IUGR but at least if I do they can get him out but he is weighing 5lbs 8oz and I'm 35 weeks.

Re: BPP & Down syndrome

  • I get a biophysical every week due to our girl having Fetal SVT. Many of us on the BMB get them for a variety of reasons (AMA, extra fluid, medical reasons, etc). The biophysical is just a way for the MFM to keep a close eye on the progress of the baby. I hope everything continues to go well for you and your LO.

  • I don't have any advice, but I hope everything is okay with your LO! 5 lbs 8 oz at 35 weeks doesn't sound too small, but I guess it depends on rate of growth, right? DD was born 6 lbs 2 oz at 37 weeks.
  • I figured it was a good weight since 4 weeks ago he was 3lbs 10oz but today they seemed concerned and asked me about my other son and how big he was etc .. it's just making me paranoid!
  • I've had a few bpp's as well. They score the ultrasound looking for different things. Once my boy got a 6/8 which meant I was staying the night at the hospital to redo it in the morning. He was sleeping and not moving the way they'd like. As soon as I ate he was back to his normal busy self.

T&p for your upcoming test. Keep us updated!

  • I have BPPs weekly now at 37+5 and they're fairly quick and like PPs have said its just to keep an eye on things. I hope you get some answers soon that help alleviate your concerns. But also baby sounds like a good size, DS1 was 6lbs 10oz at 39+4.  Good luck!
  • My DD was IUGR, and her legs measured 2 weeks behind pretty consistently.  We did BPPs weekly starting around 35 weeks, and she was induced at 39 weeks, weighed 6 lbs but healthy--just small.  My DH and I are both pretty short, so they speculate the small measurements were either genetic or due to an unhealthy placenta.  I know the uncertainty can be kind of overwhelming.  T&ps to you and baby!
  • T&P to you and your baby-- hopefully they're just being extra cautious.
  • Lurking from June16. I've had short arm and leg measurements (under 5th percentile) throughout the entire pregnancy and have been seen bi-weekly to measure growth. We did opt for all the tests (I had a 4.0 nuchal measurement as well) and they all came back negative for any chromosomal issues. Try not to stress too much as it could very well just be short legs and nothing more. :)
  • I'm sorry that your feeling anxious about the extra precautions.  Thoughts and prayers to your family.
You're not alone on the EIF - Our LO had one picked up at 20 weeks, and we declined further testing.

  • I just had a BPP on Friday night.  I ended up in the hospital due to high blood pressure and had BPP to make sure baby was tolerating it okay.  I thought the BPP was kind of cool!
