Food questions

He has loved the pouches a lot more than the spoon. He will eat off a spoon, or something whole like pieces of mango, but I think maybe he thinks the pouch is like a bottle with something other than breast milk.. and he does LOVE his bottle. Question is, is the pouch hindering him with learning how to eat correctly?

Also, when am I supposed to switch from stage one to stage two? We have been doing stage one for about 2 weeks.

And lastly, he isn't that big of a fan of the high chair. He pushes his body against it typically after eating for about one minute. I always take that as an I'm done que. However, a few times I have sat him on my lap afterwards and fed him more.. and be eats way better than in the high chair. But I'm thinking this could create a bad habit?

Re: Food questions

  • He will be 7 months on the 27th.

  • My friends son never liked being spoon fed so she always had to do the pouches and it's just what worked for them. It didn't hinder his eating habits at all when it came to table good either. I don't like using the high chair honestly, it's a hassle. I have a seat with a strap har I use and it's so much easier and less messy. I started stage 2 at the 6 month mark, stage 1 is for 4-6 months and stage 2 is 6-8. That's what my baby food cookbook says at least
  • Honestly there's really not much of a difference between stage 1 and stage 2. Stage 2 is a little thicker. As for the pouches vs spoon feeding, I think at this point you just do what works for them. You could try offering a couple bites with the spoon before the pouch and see if he starts to like it more as he gets used to it.

We skipped the high chair altogether and went with a booster seat instead and it's worked out great. She loves to be pushed up to the table.
  • I fed my lo the stage ones until he had eaten all of those at least 3 times then went on to the stage 2s. I think as long as you have made sure the ingredients in the stage two such as apples and blueberries for example that you have tried at least one of them separately in case there is a reaction then you will know oh its the blueberries not the apple.
My lo used to love the high chair now gets really frustrated. I actually fed my lo on the floor while he was sitting last night just because I didnt want to deal with the hassle of wheeling it out. I made a poor choice and got a gigantic one that I can't fold. Anyway he did great except for when he blew a raspberry onto his toy blowing chunks of food onto me lol.
I have been thinking about the pouches and why they would package stage ones or twos in pouches. Would I buy then pour out of pouch to bowl and then spoon feed? Now I wonder would my little guy prefer to suck on a pouch... I know they will eventually learn to use a spoon and fork just as I am going to go buy shoes with a velcro for my ease of putting them on him but he will still learn to tie shoes.. Just trying to talk myself into these pouches.
  • My son will also be 7 months on the 27th! :) I have been giving him stage one foods lately when I don't make his food. It's worked better than stage two so far.
  • I make his food, so we don't typically do the pouches (though I guess I could fashion my own), and he is generally spoon fed. We did do a few pouches when traveling and had no good way on the road of keeping his homemade food cold, and he sucked them down no problem, so I like that he's comfortable with a few different formats of presentation. We tried some BLW for kicks, and it mostly just ended up being smashing banana goo and not eating anything. Which, I'm find with in the "explore your food" sense, but from a nutritional standpoint, just seemed wasteful.  So we decided we'd stick with spoon feeding for now.

The pouches were really handy for travel, though, even though that's the only time we've really used them.
