Incomplete Maternit21 :(

I'm AMA, so my OB ordered Maternit21 test.  I've been so anxious waiting for results.  We had an appointment this morning and they didn't have the results yet, but by the time we left and I got back to work, the results had come in.  My doctor said he's never had this happen before, but the results were incomplete.  Like they didn't have a large enough sample or something.  But they took like a gallon of blood from my arm, so I just don't understand.  :(  Now, I have an "emergency" NT scan this afternoon because I wasn't supposed to have one since I was doing Maternit21 and I'll be 14 weeks on Wednesday.  Excited to see our baby again, but uneasy when results are inconclusive like that.  Has anyone had a similar experience?

Re: Incomplete Maternit21 :(

  • I had blood drawn for the harmony test and it came back inconclusive. Apparently there wasn't enough fetal blood in the sample. The second blood draw had enough and we got the results back in about 6 days. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

  • My results were partially inconclusive last pregnancy. There was one syndrome they could not get enough DNA for. It's not a big deal and they will just redraw.
  • Thank you, ladies!  Sometimes it helps just to know you're not alone.
  • my panorama didn't work TWICE lo
  • I had the same test done as OP.  They should have taken two vials of blood that are sent off to the labs.  If neither one of those works, which I was warned about, they could possibly ask for a redraw.  Are you getting more blood drawn to be sent back?
  • I don't believe we're going to do a redraw.  That's why OB wanted me to come in this afternoon for NT scan.
  • I'll also say that we were so anxious to find out early if it was a boy or a girl, that I can't help but be disappointed to not find that out either.  I know it's not a big deal in the big picture.  I just am a big fan of positive/negative results - not inconclusives!  :(  Whining...sorry.
  • @JennJenn81713 - I would still ask for a redraw, as you will be billed for the test anyways. I'm AMA as well, but my insurance doesn't cover it (I was told to let them bill insurance twice.. get rejected twice, call the lab, and they will give me a very reduced price). I'd still want those results as the NT scan can't check for chromosome abnormalities that the NIPT could.  I did have an NT scan and I hope yours goes well!  At least you get to see your baby on the screen, which is a nice bonus!

It's possible (not guaranteed, but possible) that they'll be able to tell gender on the NT scan at 14 weeks.  We had ours at 12 1/2 weeks and the tech could tell it was a boy (later confirmed by Verifi testing).  Maybe you could ask the tech to tell you if he or she can tell.
  • They need at least 3% of fetal DNA in the maternal blood sample to complete the test. It's not uncommon especially earlier in the pregnancy to have this problem, generally they just redraw. As for the NT scan, looking perfect isn't exactly what they're looking for. They are actually measuring the nuchal fold at the back of the neck, and depending on your race and age, this will point to problems with Downs. The Materniti test (aka: free-cell DNA test) is much more accurate, so I would do a redraw even if the NT scan looks good if you are AMA.

  • @von1976, thank you for the info. I do understand what the purpose of the NT scan is, and my comment that baby looks perfect was more just a commentary on my part. I was not aware there was such a thing as incomplete results on MaterniT21. I think I'm going to call tomorrow and ask that we do a redraw. I don't think it will be a big deal and it seems that at least a few people have had both NT and MaterniT21 scans.
