Oversupply and pumping at work?

For those working moms dealing with an oversupply, how often/long do you pump at work? Today was my first day back and I pumped in the morning for 5 minutes and got 8 ounces and a 2nd time in the afternoon for 7 minutes and got 5 ounces. I stopped at that because it covered what I will need to send to daycare tomorrow. I just wonder if it would be better to pump just once in the middle of the day but do it for longer? What do you all do?

Re: Oversupply and pumping at work?

  • I'm actually really curious to see what other people do. I haven't returned to work yet, but I plan to pump (hopefully) every 3-4 hours. If I go too long, I am uncomfortable. However, my supply is finally starting to regulate a little!

  • I pump 3 times a day while at work. I do not have an over supply that's for sure! But I do get uncomfortable so that's why I do 3 times and I want to keep my supply going.  I just freeze my extra. It's good to have for growth spurts and such.  I know I've said this before but my neighbor had an over supply so she donated a ton to me until I was able to build my own stash from pumping.
  • I pump for 10-15 minutes at work whenever I think LO would be eating, which ends up being every 3 hours. I'm only back part time (I own my own business and get to make my own hours), so I usually only need to pump once or twice
I'd recommend to keep pumping and not cut back, unless you want to lower your supply. I have an oversupply as well, but I'd rather keep it this way and store the extra in the freezer.
  • I've been pumping about every 2.5-4 hours depending on my meeting schedule and when people come in my office to talk. It works out to 3 times while at work. I'm averaging ab 5oz each time and so I pump once more at home bc I need to send 20oz to daycare.
  • I pump every 3 hours while away. So I pump in the car on the way to work, twice at work and in the car on the way home and at nighy before I go to bed. Middle of the night pumps randomly if LO only nurses one side at night. I pu.o for 20 minutes each time an get 4 Oz maybe 5oz total.
  • I pump in the morning an hour before LO wakes up (15 oz) and twice at work (12 oz). This is creating an over supply as daycare only needs 15 oz, but I'm trying to get a nice big stash going so I don't have to pump at all during the last couple months before my LO is 1-1 1/2.

I pump once in the morning for 20 mins, 3 times while at work (2 20min sessions, 1 10min session) then once before bed. I'm averaging between 35 and 40oz per day. I'm not sure if this is considered an over supply.
  • I started one sided feedings for my LO and feel like it works better for pumping and storing my milk. I feed him first thing in the morning and pump the other side. Then I pump both sides around lunch time and get a full feeding + a little. By the evening time I'm ready to nurse again, once each side through the evening and he's ready for bed. I have been having some supply issues from stress so lately I pump for 40 minutes.
  • With my son I pumped once in the middle of the day and got 8-12 oz. Since my supply was established at that point, it didn't affect it. I'm actually doing the same thing now at home because my baby girl chokes when she nurses. I plan to do the same when I return to work.

i would love 8oz in one session.
I pump twice a day at work (8-5pm gal)

I only get a total of 5.5-6oz  per day

how do you get your supply to go up? I nurse all the time at home.

  • I pump 3 times at work, and I'm lucky to get 8 ounces total. Meanwhile, baby is downing 20-24 oz at the babysitter. Thankfully I am working every other day right now, otherwise we'd be on formula by now.
  • @m6tonner You might be one of those people that just don't let down good for a pump, but have you checked everything to make sure it's working correctly? 8 oz from 3 sessions has got to be frustrating. Made sure you're using correct size flanges? Triggering multiple let down cycles during each pumping session? Tried watching a video of baby while pumping? Also, idk how long your LO is with the sitter but 20-24 ounce is a lot of milk. Are they doing paced feedings? Lots of videos online to help demonstrate
