Can someone help me with Sperm numbers? (siggy warning)

I have secondary IF. I did try posting to that board but it doesn't seem very active.

Could anyone experienced with SA numbers help me out? I had my first IUI this morning - Follices were 23,20,18, 16,16 and my e2 was 870.

The only issue they have found so far is MFI, but she said numbers looked "good"today but didnt elaborate.

Can anyone tell me what these mean? How could you have 61 million/ml post wash, and 28 million/ml before? does that make sense? I am wondering if the first set of numbers are maybe his previous SA to compare? Not sure.

Help!

Re: Can someone help me with Sperm numbers? (siggy warning)

  • They concentrate the sperm for the IUI, so the volume is much smaller, generally making the number per mL higher. If I'm understanding it correctly, there was 5.5mL pre-wash, so 5.5x28 million or 154 million total sperm to start. After wash there was 61 million per mL.
  • Loading the player...
  • The counts are per ml.  So out of 5.5 ml of semen, he had a count of 28.8 million per ml.  Post wash he had a higher concentration because they got rid of any sperm that weren't moving, reduced the concentration to 2 ml, with 61.3 mil per ml, does that make sense?  So the count after wash was actually 122.6 million.  Doesn't sound like MFI to me! :)

    Me: 34, DH: 38 ~ TTC since 2014
    IUI #1-3 (Nov 2015, Feb 2016, May 2016) = BFNs
IVF ER (July 2016) = 7 PGS normal embryos
    FET #1 (Sept 2016) = BFP! DD born 5/30/17
    FET #2 (April 2019) = BFN
    FET #3 (July 2019) = BFP! DS born 3/27/20
  • thank you guys! so they put all the "good sperm" into less liquid? I think i get it......
  • why does IUI volume say 0.5ml though?
  • Exactly!  I'm not sure about the IUI volume being 0.5 mL but I'm pretty sure our IUI volume was the same.

    Yup!

My IUI volume was about that as well.

I don't work with sperm, but I do work with human blood cells and there is a limit to the number of blood cells you can put in 1mL, so I would expect that it would be the same for sperm, so I would guess that's why they put the sperm in 2mL. Maybe there is also a limit to the amount of liquid they can put in the uterus because it seems like we are all getting 0.5mL for the IUI.

I think it means 0.5 ml of the 2.0ml of 61.3m/ml was used. So only 30 million used???
