DS is 5 months and usually drinks 4 bottles of breast milk at daycare. At what age should I start introducing Sippy cups for BM or should I not do that?
The ADA recommends transitioning babies to a sippy cup by their first bday. We have introduced the sippy cup and use it during meals (LO is now on solids). He does not really know or understand how to drink from it yet, but I just let him suck and touch it and try to hold it for now. We're in no way pushing it yet and probably won't for a while, but the one we have is for 4m+, so I just decided to do a gradual introduction.
At our last doctor's appointment she said around 6 months we can introduce a sippy cup to let her practice. We also started introducing solids and plan to do baby led weaning, but I haven't tried giving her a sippy cup yet.
I put formula in it. But the directions say not to mix the formula IN the sippy cup, so I mix it in a bottle and then pour it in. I'm sure you could also do water if you want. My LO also has a few ounces of a juice/water mix each day bc of constipation, so I have put that in there before too.
We introduced the sippy cup at 4 mo. She does not eat solids yet. The cup I got uses nipples from her bottle so she's really just using a bottle with handles. I plan on switching the nipple to a normal sippy cup one once she can eat solids fairly well.
I've been giving LO an empty sippy cup to play with in her high chair, now that we sit her there while we eat meals to get her used to family mealtime. The packet on solids my ped gave out says to offer a sippy with just a tiny amount of water in it at meals. No more than 2-3ozs per day. I'll likely stick to that amount, but keep it available all day, especially when we hit summer time and spend more time outdoors.
