It IS possible to kegel too much!

So this is an odd thread I'm about to start--never thought I'd be told to stop kegel-ing!

I am a fitness instructor, barre & yoga. I also lift & do cardio regularly. Recently, I've been experiencing pain when my husband & I have sex. I had an Obgyn appt yesterday & he checked me out & I heard the unthinkable... Stop kegel-ing and doing pelvic floor exercises. He told me I am clenching my muscles down there to the point where I am having muscle spasms. So now I am trying to learn how to relax those muscles.

None of my girlfriends have ever been told to stop doing pelvic floor exercises & thought it was interesting! I always feel like I pee so easily so I guess I've been just holding the muscles all the time.

Just thought I'd share. :)

  • I've heard of this! A friend from high school is a physiotherapist to help with that.

I can picture this now, 15 year reunion - Class of 2001:

    "Oh hey Bill!"

    "Oh hey Ted!"

"Man it's been a long time! How's Suzy?"

"Excellent man. Excellent. Last I heard you were in school for physical therapy. How'd that go?"

"Dude. DUUUUUDE. I met this cougar professor who told me that there's a job where all you do all day is stretch tight vaginas."

**spits out call liquor from lame bar**
The perineum massage is supposed to do that. I really hope I won't get to that point it's so uncomfortable. But still kinda funny :)
  • Congrats on your rock hard puss.

    Thanks for sharing?

You're welcome ;) I thought it was just odd & I laughed when I left. Of course I am so anxious that even my vag suffers! It hurt so bad when he examined me I had tears streaming down my face. But once I found out why I thought how ridiculous it was haha.

Omg I hope I don't do that. Haha I think I just carry so much anxiety I guess I just hold it up all the time. What a problem to have lol
  • YEEESSSS!!! Thank you for posting about this. You CAN overstrengthen those muscles which makes it very difficult to push the baby out. No one muscle is meant to be strengthened endlessly. And if you did, what would it be? Overly developed and exhausted, not to mention the other muscles would be weak. If you want to strengthen, do your whole pelvic floor, in the form of squats (with glutes).  I cannot recommend this website enough if you want to learn more. She talks all about this.

  • Just for the record, this is called vaginissmus, and it's not to do with overstrengthening the pelvic floor, it's to do with disco-ordination of the muscles. That is, your control of the muscles has become incorrect, for want of a better word, so they contract inappropriately. It's actually often associated with weak muscles. It also tends to be a self fulfilling prophecy because once you get pain, then your body starts tensing in response to anticipating anything entering the vagina in case it hurts, which makes it hurt more, and so on.

The he answer is not to stop doing kegels, it's to see a physiotherapist who deals with women's health issues specifically and they'll teach you how to get control of the muscles back.

I'm sure this is all very true and helpful, but now all I can picture is a bless-ed Titanium Puss Partay. I'm so immature.

Ahahahaha! Yeah I did look at that word for a long time thinking 'is that right, it looks like I'm talking about organising a disco?' But the phone kept autocorrecting to that so I figured maybe it was just me. Obviously not! :)
