Infertility

What does this mean?

hi everyone! I'm so new to all this that I'm still a little confused and clueless about some of this. I was wondering how to tell exactly what my timeline for IVF/ICSI will be.

we go in for our medicine training on May 11 and my RE said he wanted to start with my May period. I'm supposed to get my period May 26th. So do injections and medicine start the week before or 2 weeks before? If my period is scheduled to start May 26th when will implementation most likely be? I just want to make sure I'm as prepared as I can be. I want to make sure I'm not working out too much before all this starts etc. can anyone shed some light on how the timeline usually works? Thanks!!

Re: What does this mean?

  • Hi there. My clinic had me take birth control pills first, then injections started on day 3 of the period/cycle. I actually didn't have me period until day 4, but I went in for my baseline ultrasound and blood work on what would have been day 3 and based on that I started injections same day. Injections on average last anywhere from 10-12 days (could be less or more depending on how you respond to the injections.) Then once your follicles are mature enough and get to their right size, you will do the trigger injection that will trigger ovulation. 36 hours after the trigger you will have your egg retrieval. Are you doing fresh or frozen transfer? If fresh, the transfer is typically 5 days after the retrieval (at least my clinic doesn't do day 3 transfer anymore, only day 5.) If frozen, your embryos will be frozen your RE will give you your FET protocol. Hope this helps. You should ask your doctor for the step by step timeline. My clinic gave me a sample schedule of how timing of everything works and then we just plugged in my dates along the day.

  • @tulips29 thank you for responding. I called my doctor and apparently we will get our cycle plan when we go in for medication training on May 11th. They said it will be up to the doctor whether we start injections right after my natural period on May 26th. I guess a couple days after or whether we start birth control once my period starts May 26th and then start injections a couple weeks after that.

is one option better than the other? Do most people do BC pills before starting injections or has anyone done injections right after your normal cycle period?

Everyone's IVF protocol can vary widely. Your doctor should provide you with calendars eventually. I started my retrieval meds shortly after my period started, I do not remember which CD (2 or 3) right now. I stimmed for 11 ish days. I am doing IVF with a frozen cycle, so my Retrieval was March 3rd and my transfer is not until April 28. I had one partial cycle between. My beta is May 9th. I would also consult your doctor when it comes to exercise.

    Good luck!!

  • We had three weeks of BCP and then started shots on day 3 of my cycle. My retrieval was delayed a couple days to let the follicles that were close to maturing finish. My clinic does 3 day transfers depending on your ER. The preference is usually to get to 5 days but in our case we only had 4 embryos and 2 stopped developing on the third day so our clinic believes in freezing early so it's not a wasted cycle. My FET protocol had injections for close to 4 weeks after BCP. Usually there is a nurse coordinator that will go through everything with you and lay out all the scenarios and dates for everything.

  • I never took bcps. Period came April 1 naturally. Started stimming on day 2 of my cycle and stimmed for 8 days or so. Took the trigger shot and had retrieval yesterday. Transfer is this Monday. My cycle was really fast.
  • @Drove2u I actually just got the call today that we are starting with my Aprik period and no BC pills either. I'm excited and hopeful! I'll have FX that every thing goes great for you Monday! Let us know how it goes
  • For a very quick run down as someone who didn't do BC pills:
started my period (day1), went in on day 3 for US/bloodwork, started injections that night and did stimms for 10 days, triggered on the 10th night, retrieval 2 days later, and then transfer 5 days later. :)

  • I've had 3 ER. I start with BCP. I think it was a different amount of time each time.  Once I stopped,  I came in on day 3. My of my ERs were  between days 14 and 15. (Possibly 16 the last time. )
  • As you can see, everyone's protocol is different! I was on BCPs for two weeks, will stop on Saturday, go for baseline Sunday and will start injections on Wednesday.
  • Thanks y'all for all the info! There's so much to learn with all this!
