Transitioning to Crib

We are thinking of transitioning our LO to her crib this weekend. She has been in a bassinet in our room up to this point. However, she is a noisy sleeper and I Wake up to every grunt and coo. We are hoping that moving her to her own room means some longer sleep sessions for mom. Any tips or tricks from the moms that have already done this? Hoping to make it as smooth a transition as possible.

Re: Transitioning to Crib

  • We put our LO in her own room at 4 weeks for the same reason. For a few days i just put her up there for her naps, and then at night. We also spent a little time hanging out up there for those days so that she would get used to the different environment. It worked well for us

  • We are in the same boat too. Thinking of transitioning our little girl to the crib in her own room as well!
  • When we moved our daughter we just... put her in there one night and that was that. It might be just that easy.

  • My LO has been in her crib for about a week now (she'll be 7 weeks Sunday). I've been putting her in it for naps since she was born but she never slept for long. She slept good streches in her napper attachment for the pack n play so I got a crib wedge (or you can put books under the head of the crib) so she's not completely flat and it was a game changer. We swaddle and turn on the white noise machine. She's sleeping longer stretches (10-5am 5:30-8ish) being out of our room where we all can't hear each other.

    Good luck!

  • Just do it.  No real transition needed.  And enjoy the extra sleep.

  • I tried to put DS in his for a nap today. He lasted 10 minutes. I tried to rock him back to sleep and he just stared at me. For 45 minutes. And hardly slept the rest of the day. *sigh* just reminding myself this won't last forever! I'm hoping if I can get him used to napping in his crib, nighttime will be a smooth transition.

  • I started DS1 at 4 weeks in his crib (that kid was noisy!).  Before that we were co sleeping.  I'm ready to start trying DS2 in the crib, since he's already sleeping pretty well, but I think he wakes up more frequently than he normally would because he can smell me (me= milk).  We currently cosleep, and while I'm seriously enjoying the nights with him, I'm feeling pretty owly and peep eyed in the mornings when I have to deal with him and brother.  We have cribs and mattresses set up for both.  The only thing stopping us now is curtains in both rooms - we have the curtains, but the rod situation is tricky with the dormers.  Once DH figures that out, I'm popping DS2 in the crib to see how he does.  If he weren't so snuffly (thanks to brother) I think he'd already be sleeping longer stints in his crib.  Around this time, DS1 was getting 5 hour stints in his crib (as an EBF baby) - he stayed pretty clockwork to the 3 week leap = 3 hours, 5 week leap = 5 hours, 8 week leap = 8 hours of sleep.  It was fantastic and scary at the same time.  I'm not expecting this was to be the exact same, but he does like to sleep a lot during the day so I'm hoping better sleep at night will lead to more trackable wake times during the day.  Ready to get on those 1.5 hour schedules I remember with DS1!
  • First night went really well baby went down in the crib like a champ. Last night not so much! She would go down for 15-20 min stretch and then wake up screeching. Didn't realize until the middle of the night her room was significantly cooler than ours due to the snow and a drafty window. Hubby caulked the window today so we will try some warmer pjs and see. However she has been sleeping more than normal today so it might be a rough night.

thanks for all the advice ladies!

  • Any tips on how to transition a newborn from your room to theirs in their own crib? Is almost 6 weeks to early to do so?
  • @rebeccamp1 it depends on what you're comfortable with. Personally, DD was in her own room since before she was a month because I can't sleep with all the noises she makes. I put the newborn napper attachment from my pack n play in the crib until she got used to the new area.
  • Great idea with the pack n play! I too am having problems sleeping with all of the noises my baby makes. Should I start her out in naps and slowly add up to night time?
  • That's what I did. She's always napped in her crib so it didn't feel like a major transition. I did take the napper adjustment out and have her nap in the actual crib during the day.
  • Making the transition tonight after DS was grunting in his sleep from 4 am to 730 am. Sleep when the baby sleeps they say...HA! Wish us luck!
