Talk to me about Cholestasis

Guess what I've been diagnosed with?! Cholestasis! Yaaaaaaay...

Who else has had this and how did it play out in your pregnancy? Lots of USs, NTSs, lab work, etc? I've researched this to high heaven and I'm kind of freaking out. The doctor was perplexed by it considering I'm still in first trimester, but you can't fake the lab tests. We're waiting on an US with MFM, but so far all signs point to cholestasis.

  • I now have to google :)

  • I was tested for it in 3rd tri last time and was negative but they kept an eye on things, made me do a 24 hour urine collection, and more blood work over the rest of the time I was pregnant. The only thing that was ever really explained to me was that if i had it I'd not be allowed to go to 40 weeks and instead would be induced at 37.

I'm sorry you ended up with it, and so early. Try to stay away from Dr Google if you can and just do whatever your doctor tells you to do. You will have a lot of blood work and NST's over the next few months and will probably stay with MFM.

Too late to stay away from google, lol. Right now I'm just playing phone tag with my MW about what comes next. I'm so afraid that the MWs will drop me and I'll have to be induced (the complete antithesis of what I want for this birth)

  • Oh man, I'm sorry to hear! How far along are you (sorry I'm always mobile so I can't see tickers). I had ICP with my last pregnancy. I had itchy hands and itchy feet at about 35w and mentioned it to my doc. I was induced at 37w which is standard practice for cholestasis. My bile acids had just gone to the abnormal range at 37w and the doc had given me urso. I only had 3 NSTs but they're not bad. I'm being monitored for it this time since there's a decent chance I'll get it again. So far my numbers are in normal range.

What made your doc test? Did the doc diagnose based on LFTs or Bile Acid? Did your doc give you any guidance for controlling the itch? If not, I'd recommend asking what you can take.

  • I had it my first pregnancy. I didn't have it until late in pregnancy though and delivered at 37 weeks. It was the worst thing I have ever went through, and thankfully I never got it the second time.
You'll likely have to have extra non stress tests and appointments to make sure baby is still happy.
Nothing helped the itch but it was 3 years ago so hopefully by now they've come out with something.

  • I'm 11 weeks today.

I finally got to talk to my MW and she thinks my GP is wrong, and that it's gall stones. Regardless, I'm seeing MFM next Tuesday for an ultrasound and more lab work.

My symptoms are/were white stools (sorry, TMI), itchiness and elevated bile acids. I'm waiting to hear back on my liver function test.

  • I'm surprised that you would be dx'd with cholestasis so early; I hope your midwife is right (I think? Though I don't know how much gall stones suck in comparison).

My sister had cholestasis that was dx'd late in her pregnancy and they induced her a few weeks early. Apart from being induced though she went med free, no pain meds, and had a really amazing birth that she was super happy with. If that's important to you or may still be doable, even with an early induction! Good luck!
