STM question - Moses baskets and newborns

Hello - I have a question for STMs.  I've been planning on using a moses basket as a bassinet next to my bed for the first 2 months.  In shopping for one, I find too many of them have cushy, plush liners which don't seem safe for sleeping.  So I am now thinking of just using the moses basket, without a liner on a sturdy stand meant for moses baskets.  Has anyone else done this?  I don't see why it would be less safe than any other bassinet. When I google moses baskets and safety, some sights say they should not be used for babies to sleep, but then I see comments from people who used them and loved them... google is my worst enemy!

Re: STM question - Moses baskets and newborns

  • I personally wouldn't because they don't seem very sturdy/safe.

  • Bassinets in general are less safe because they aren't subject to the same regulations as cribs. That said, we got a Halo Bassinest for the bedside. Would the moses basket just lay on the floor next to your bed or does it have a stand?
  • @LadySamLadyI am now looking at the Halo bassinet as well.  But my plan for the moses basket was to get a stand, NOT to have it on the floor.  There are stands made specifically for moses baskets.
  • I have a Moses basket and have this same iffy-ness about it too. I think we'll likely try the Rock n Play or Pack n Play before we resort to the Moses basket.
  • I have used the Arm's Co Sleeper Bassinet for both my first two kids and plan to use it for this one too...I don't use it as a co-sleeper but as a free standing bassinet...it has mesh all around for free air flow and it is not soft cushion.  HTH
  • We used a Moses basket with stand for both my babies and liked it fine. It was not something we purchased ourselves, but we used it for about 3 weeks with each baby. I then transitioned them to their crib after that, as I felt the more movement they made in their sleep, I didn't want them in the basket.
