Baby refuses breast milk

My son started off on breast milk and then we had to switch over slowly to mostly formula with breastmilk once a day in the evenings. He started crying whenever I fed him breast milk and refusing to drink it; however, if I switched to formula right after he started crying, he was fine and drank it. Has anyone had this happen? Could it be that he just has a preference for formula now?

Re: Baby refuses breast milk

  • Are you feeding him breast milk that was stored and then thawed out and heated. Usually babies will prefer breast milk over formula as the breast milk is sweeter. If it is stored than thawed it could be that it gets a certain taste to it that the baby may not like. I tried to find the article to reference but couldn't find it. But try looking up taste in breast milk. If this is not the case it be hard to point out why.

  • We just started doing one Oz of b.m. in every 7 Oz bottle. She doesn't seem to notice.
  • This... Once BM has been frozen it can develop a soapy taste that some babies do not like. It is called high lipase. Check out this blog...
