Middle Names

Since many appear to be having the same issue, figured I'd start a middle name thread. Where others can also ask and sound off.

Currently stuck on the middle names for lo. We have an extremely plain last name (think Smith or Jones).

Madeleine Beatrice (my grandmothers name)
Madeleine Rose
Madeleine Elise (my in laws)

Thoughts? I really prefer Beatrice but I think it may make it too long.

  • I like Elise!
  • I like Elise too. Lovely
  • I actually like Beatrice the best. Especially if your last name is short and simple.

Really though, those are all very pretty choices!

  • You can't go wrong with any of them. As a name alone, I like Beatrice best, but I think I prefer the flow of Madeleine Elise in this case.

  • I like the flow of Madeline Rose  :)

  • All of your options are solid but I also prefer Madeline Elise.
  • I like Elise the best. Madeline Beatrice is a mouthful, IMO.

    This was my thought too.
  • Love Beatrice. While it is longer to say I like the sound of it better with Madeline when compared to Elise. I think it's the back to back Es I don't like :)

Our family follows the "rule" that middle names should honor family names. But I like rose also as a middle name, better than Elise.
  • I like Rose and then Elise. Both are very pretty!

I like 1. Elise and 2. Rose. Gorgeous!
  • I like the middle name Rose the best but I think if your last name is a single syllable that Beatrice works better.
  • Beatrice or Elise.
  • I love Beatrice! I feel like Rose is becoming one of those filler middle names (aside from cases where it is honoring family members), it's beautiful but so are your other options.
  • I, too, vote for Elise. I may be a little biased though since my name is Alysse. :)

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the three, but Beatrice wins for me because 1) family name and 2) it's less common.

  • Rose! And I'm not just saying that because that's the middle name we picked too :)
  • Thank you all for sharing your opinions! I'm as torn as ever on it but I appreciate all of the responses.

My real issue is, as Madeleine is our first child, if I want to play the long game and use Beatrice as a first name for baby #2. It'd be a gamble and of course, as much as we've said we want   2.... Nothing is a guarantee. Especially since 3rd trimester is kicking my butt right now.
  • I like Beatrice a lot!

on the topic of middle names, we are thinking of going without. I did not change my last name and my current idea is to give him both our last names--not hyphenated. If he wants to shorten, it will be easier; he can just use the first letter of the first last name, then a period, then the second last name. Or he can use his "full" last name. All this to say, I thought two last names and a middle name sounds a bit...much. Anyone hyphenating or doing two last names? If so, are you doing a middle name, too?

So...my mom being the woman she is, did change her last name when she married my dad, but insisted on working her maiden name into mine and my sister's names as well. We each have a middle name, and then have her maiden name as a second middle name and then my dad's last name as our only last name. It is a lot, but it's only used on legal documentation. I've literally only had to sign or spell out my first, middle, second middle (mom's maiden), and last name a handful of times and I really appreciate that I have my mom's maiden name worked in there. My dad didn't have any boys (he adopted my brother but my brother decided to take his biological father's last name after his biological father committed suicide a few years back) so my maiden name will not be carried on. My maiden name is one of those weird ones where my ancestors changed the spelling and pronunciation when they came to the US from Italy, so my immediate family is the only family in the world with the spelling of the name. For this reason, DH and I have talked about adding my maiden name the same way my mom added her maiden name...so that even though my maiden name won't necessarily get carried on in a traditional sense, it won't just evaporate into thin air once my dad passes and/or my sister gets married.

I actually changed my maiden name to my middle name when I married. It's a really cute idea to do for your child and a nice way to tie your name in.
